Never Outshine the Master- You should be observant of those in positions of authority or influence. By not overshadowing or threatening them with your abilities or accomplishments, you avoid arousing envy and resentment, thus maintaining a favorable position.

Just finished the Laws of Human Nature - definitely a book that makes this observational take come much more easily.
