Something amazing is coming to Apache Kafka… Consumer Groups v2! If you’ve ever used consumer groups in production at any non-trivial scale, you probably know all the problems with it: - ⛔️ Group-wide synchronization barrier acts as a cap on scalability A single misbehaving consumer can disturb the whole group. Even if you have cooperative rebalancing and static membership enabled, you will still have rebalances happen. 🤷‍♂️ It’s a fact of life I've heard - death, taxes & consumer group rebalances. And the problem is that even with cooperative rebalancing (which helped a lot!), you’re bound on waiting for the slowest member of the group to complete the rebalance(s). 🐌 The problem is that no consumer can commit offsets while a rebalance is in progress. ❌ Another subtle thing is that with cooperative rebalancing, a rebalance will take longer than usual. Why? Because consumers are allowed to process partitions during rebalances. They will call the poll() method more infrequently -- they're busy processing records after all. Thus, the overall rebalance time will increase. This makes it pretty hard to scale to 1000s of members. - 🤯 Complexity There’s a reason you’re reading this! The current protocol is pretty complex and hard to understand. It's used for a bunch of stuff, including metadata propagation in Kafka Streams. This compexity results in more: - 🐛 bugs The harder to reason about and the more moving parts you have - the greater chance for bugs. There have been quite a few in the protocol. And due to the fact that a lot of the protocol’s logic lives on the clients, that results in: - 🐌 slow fixes Bugs require client-side fixes, which are slow to be adopted. If you run a Kafka ops team, you know how hard it is to get all of your clients' teams to upgrade! If you're using a cloud service, you need to wait for a new Kafka release to go out. Can't have the cloud provider handle it for you behind the scenes! - 🔍 hard to debug Debugging is harder because you need client logs. In the cloud, that's hard to do again. On-prem, it requires reading through a lot of logs and collecting a lot of files. - ⚙️ very extendable There’s a reusable embedded protocol within the rebalance protocol, where clients are free to attach raw bytes that only they can then parse themselves. It's challenging to build compatible software for this cross-client protocol, as well as near-impossible to inspect from the broker side. - 😢 inconsistent metadata Clients are responsible for triggering rebalances based on the metadata, but different clients can have different views of the metadata. - 😵‍💫 interoperability Different implementations of the clients (i.e. anything besides the Java client) may have bugs. The complex logic needs to be re-implemented quite a few times. This usually means more bugs and slower time to ship features in your favorite client. A combination nobody likes. ... So what should an open source community do? Move the logic to the broker! Then? Simplify it. The new protocol is very elegant - it streamlines all of the regular Kafka consumer logic inside a new heartbeat API. It has the broker decide what partition assignments the consumers should have, and totally omits the notion of a Group Leader client. Another major change is that the notion of a group-wide rebalance is removed now. The rebalance is more fine-grained now. 👌 When you think about it, a rebalance is simply a reassignment of some partitions from some consumers to others. 💡 Why does the whole group need to stop and know about this? It had to before because the logic was on the client. It doesn’t now. 🎂 The new protocol is fine-grained in its assignments. It maintains per-member epochs, as well as separate epochs for the general group membership and the global assignment. The goal is simple - get all of those epoch numbers to be the same. The order is the following: 1. the group-wide epoch is bumped. 2. the target assignment epoch is bumped. 3. individual consumers catch up to the epoch via the heartbeat request, individually. (fine-grained) In general, what you have is a simple state machine inside the Group Coordinator broker that’s running a constant reconciliation loop. 💥 Because every member converges to the target state independently, the coordinator is free to simplify that convergence member by member. 👍 It has the logic to resolve dependencies between members - the act of: 1. revoking one member’s partition. 2. confirming the success of that. 3. bumping that member's epoch before assigning that partition to another consumer. Congratulations ZackeryFox🌏2️⃣👽 for your 2D concept art submission our team then took & brought to life in 3D for #Earth2🌍✌️This skin took longer given the detail & quality of the modelling but was definitely worth it! Read below for more important details & updates: The first variations of #CybercoreX will drop in about 8 hours. As mentioned in the article when we first started releasing skins, after #E2V1 officially launches we will be cutting back on #LimitedEdition skins & will predominantly focus on unlimited skins. In some cases these future unlimited skins will not be available for resale. This was always the plan as these early #LimitedEdition skins were released especially for early supporters. We will still release #LimitedEditions from time to time, but if & when we do so it will be at higher prices - which has also been mentioned numerous times in the past but I am just providing this as a reminder. I think we have 2-3 Limited Edition skins remaining before we transition into the standard skin system with unlimited skins & periodic availability - so there are not many left and these final Limited Edition drops will contain a few more rarer variations. #CybercoreX took a lot of additional work & team members strongly suggested the skin should be sold at a premium price, however I decided to keep the pricing in line with the other pre-#E2V1 Limited Edition releases. I just want to be clear that this NOT the avatar spawn system you have seen in demo videos to date where we just randomly spawn an avatar anywhere, that is simple & we could easily release that specific feature but it was only for demo purposes to showcase avatars can spawn anywhere in the world. To be transparent, what we are working to release now is the actual avatar spawn system intended for long term use where Players need to synthesise their #avatar from their #Mentar on their property to begin its actual life inside #E2V1. It's important to point out this involves numerous API integration, UI/UX updates and is not a simple random spawn. We anticipate there will almost surely be a number of potential bugs with this release so the plan is to first have it released to testers (WITH BUGS EXPECTED!) then stabilise & prepare for the public #E2V1 release. If you see people publishing footage of bugs online, remember we are in pre-alpha which we released to testers less than a month ago & testers are there to help us test and find issues we need to resolve. Our team is committed to fixing any major problems as they arise to improve the platform and keep moving forward. We should have avatars into the hands of testers this week. Remember, once you are inside your avatar you will not have that free camera flying ability. This makes teleportation very important for #Players who want to travel to different locations. So we will also need to start testing the teleportation system, and there is some potentially exciting news I have been keeping close to my chest which will soon be revealed. Ah, I just happened to urgently took a restroom break and ran back here in a hurry, I actually prepared a lot for today, but I'm so out of breath. I've had 3 cases of complaints to my employer, NHS. 1. From a gay guy I worked with who claims I've been homophobic for not going along with the trans ideology. 2. A Muslim, who because I've spoken out about the grooming gangs reported me for being islamophobic. 3. Someone very high up in the Royal Stoke Hospital, hosted an anti-racism event within the hospital & posted pictures of it on a staff FB forum. I commented about how a Pakistani is being racist to me. Me posting that has now ment I'm under investigation for being islamophobic. The first two allegations, the NHS has found that both accusers have been lying. They both made wild claims about me. Both, tried to get me arrested & locked up. I have asked the NHS what actions will be taken against the gay gentleman who's been lying & trying to ruin me. They refuse to respond. They understood that the Muslim was lying & also was threatening me with violence. But I've still been islamophobic apparently. The Royal Stoke Hospital has now hired lawyers to try & intimidate me. Previously I had meetings with the HR team what I have recordings of & in due time I will release because their incompetence needs to be shown. I've not been racist or homophobic to anyone. Next week I've got to defend myself against a lawer the NHS has paid for using taxpayers money to try & get rid of me. I've worked for this NHS trust for 16-years & never had any complaints. I worked throughout COVID while managers worked from home. The things what I witnessed during that time was crazy. The money that was wasted, the lack of care for patient samples. Staff members committing sex acts on each other. Managers covering it all up. We do not have free speech in the UK & if you do speak out you get your life ruined & you're tarnished a racist, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic person. The NHS needs reforming.

Took 2 months off of the gym and as you can see it doesn’t look like it at all. That is because how you look is MAJORLY impacted by what you eat. In the 2 months off, I tracked my meals everyday and made sure to stay active by taking over 12,000 steps per day. I did feel noticeably smaller but I wasn’t concerned because my body is known to bounce back pretty damn fast when I lock in. And that takes us to, ‘Chapter 2026. The Lock In.’ This year in my off season I plan to pack on an OD amount of size. I say size instead of muscle because in putting on size, I’m guaranteed to pack on body fat as well. Not as much as I would if I ate whatever I wanted and claimed I was “dirty bulking.” I spent way too much time getting lean last year to lose it all recklessly. How I’m going to do it is simple and straight forward. 1. Track my macros. 2. Prioritize protein and increase calories gradually by increasing my carb intake and keeping fat at a moderate level. 3. Training on a 5 day split. 4. Keeping light cardio a part of my routine. 5. Focusing on my recovery. That’s it. There’s no secret sauce or formula. It’s simply doing what you’re supposed to do consistently and making it a non negotiable habit. Once you start to see progress it becomes addicting and you begin to love the process. If you wait until you “get there” you’re going to miss out on the real fun and journey. I’m going to be documenting the entire year with the core of the content I produce and release be to educate you guys on what I am doing in fun creative ways. I don’t want this to be a year of, “watch me do it.” I’d rather it be a, “here, do it with me.” Which is why all my workout plans and meal guides are available for download on my website. Simply pick a program that fits your goals, download, follow along and repeat. As some of you will have read/seen, we recently regained financial and editorial control of PSN (PlaySportsNetwork) from Warner Bros Discovery, which means some changes for me. I could never have imagined when I joined GCN at its inception in 2012 that we'd go from a small start-up YouTube channel, to multiple channels with many millions of subscribers, billions of views, to starting a successful subscription service that showed the biggest races in the world and a heap of amazing cycling documentaries. GCN’s journey with Eurosport and live racing is something I’ll never forget - we achieved a hell of a lot in a very short time. I think we made some really positive changes for cycling, and I will always be very proud of that. However, it's been a tough 8 months or so for GCN - the shuttering of GCN+, and now the website, has meant we've lost a lot of very talented, hard working colleagues who are incredibly passionate about the sport. The show must go on, though. GCN is still full of amazing people, and more importantly, supported by an incredible community of cyclists. I firmly believe that the next part of our journey will be more exciting than ever - I want to be part of, and instrumental in that next adventure, the next chapter. Unfortunately, that means I will no longer be on The Breakaway or Eurosport’s cycling commentary. It's a part of my job that I will dearly miss, but more than that, I will miss the fantastic group of people (on screen/mic and off) who I had the privilege of working with there for the last few years. I really couldn't have asked for a better team to spend three weeks at a time with. Thanks to all of you who have been so kind in your messages of support for GCN these last few months - it's really meant the world to everyone at the company. As an aside, I know a lot of you have been waiting for the GCN+ documentaries to find a new home, and the good news is that they'll be available again via a YouTube membership that we're setting up LATER TODAY. This Week Building Exit Five (Bootstrapping a B2B Media Company): 1) We debuted new branding - new logo, new colors, new font, new design, website, etc. We worked with this great company called NoBoringDesign run by Eli Rubel 🏄‍♀️ and it came out awesome. The response from our community was very positively positive. Out of all the comments and email replies the best were the handful that said something along the lines of "this brings the business to life in a new way" and "this really feels like Exit Five grew up in a good way." A few people didn't like it and that's OK too. 2) We announced the details of our in-person event - it's called Drive. September 11 - 12 in Burlington, Vermont. Tickets go on sale next week. The event will be small on purpose so we only have 150 tickets available. There's already 216 people on our waiting list, so if you want to be there go to exitfive . com / event and put your name on the list; we'll notify you ASAP when tickets go on sale. 3) I recorded a bunch of new episodes of the Exit Five podcast. This week with Adam Robinson (talking about LinkedIn and founder brand), Jenn Herman (covering Instagram for B2B), Matt and I recorded Inside Exit Five for this week, and I'm talking to Amanda Goetz later today. 4) We finalized the concept for a new Exit Five community product. This will be focused on B2B Marketing Leaders on Monday morning (a smaller group that will be application only for Directors, VPs in B2B). You'll hear more about this in June. 5) The CEO of a big successful company reached out to me directly to try and recruit me to work for his company; flattering. But his pitch was to poo poo on my "little bootstrapped thing" to go work on something "much bigger and more meaningful." I am all set for now. I'm having fun here. 6) I played some golf, did a bunch of push-ups, and coached my son's Tee Ball team. They called us far right extremists when we exposed the rape gangs. They demonised us as racists when we spoke out against the growing Islamist threat in this country and the creeping of Sharia law into public life. And they called us conspiracy theorists when we exposed how the Pakistani biraderi exploit weaknesses in our democracy to manipulate elections. On every single occasion, we have been proven right. On every occasion, they have tried and failed to silence us. The question now is what happens with that vindication. The establishment cannot keep dismissing what ordinary people have seen with their own eyes, documented, and paid a personal price to expose. Our names have been cleared. Our evidence is a matter of public record. Now we must attack and take the fight to them in a way they have never before experienced. What is needed next is not more inquiries or carefully worded reviews, it is accountability. Real consequences, for real people, who looked the other way while children were abused and democracy was hollowed out from within. The same people that protected the rape gangs are the ones involved in rigging elections. When I tell you that children were sold for votes, this is the method that was used. We can fix this. MT2.. my, originally i wanted to put it out this year, but i kind of want to take my time just prepping it a little bit more. so it probably won't happen this year. but i'm working on it. ●Mark: i'll probably put out a few singles this year just to put music out, put some songs out this year. and then we'll see next year maybe MT2. This is a big update! visionOS 2.4 Beta is now available and I’m genuinely excited! The public release hits in April, but here’s the rundown of what’s available in visionOS 2.4 Beta today: • Apple Intelligence is coming to Vision Pro! All those rumors that said the first model wouldn’t get it. Dead wrong. We’re getting Image Playground to whip up fun images, Genmoji for custom emojis, and my personal favorite, Writing Tools. This is just the start of Apple Intelligence on Vision Pro and I’m excited to see where it takes us. • Guest User feature! Hand your Vision Pro to someone, and your nearby iPhone or iPad pings with an 'Allow Guest User' option. You pick their apps from your device, kick off View Mirroring with AirPlay to see what they’re seeing, and guide them through the experience. It’s clean, easy, and something many of us have been asking for. • A new Spatial Gallery app! Apple’s curating a stunning lineup of spatial photos, videos, and panoramas from artists, filmmakers, and brands like Cirque du Soleil and Porsche. Can’t wait to dive into that. • A new Vision Pro app for iPhone! Browse and queue up apps or games to download, discover spatial content from Apple TV and Spatial Gallery, and grab handy tips—all from your iPhone. It’ll roll out with iOS 18.4 wherever Vision Pro’s sold. I think it’ll be super useful. visionOS 2.4 is a big step up and it’s another strong signal that we have a lot to look forward to with spatial computing from Apple. We are just getting started.

Fifteen years ago, we were traveling with burned CD’s and cut up old blue jeans, stamped with “The Head And The Heart” to put the copies in. We had no expectations and a full tank of gas. We had songs and we had each other…Our roots had grown and we were about to begin a wild journey. In those early days before record labels and long tours, we had a demo of “Lost In My Mind” that we had recorded in our apartment in Seattle in late 2009. It was loose, imperfect, and honest in a way that only first attempts can be. We’re so excited to dust it off and present it to you today! Listening back to it, we’re transported to that apartment, when all that existed was belief in our songs and each other. On May 1st, we’re releasing a 15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of our debut record. The album has been fully remastered, and we’re including seven additional demos and unreleased versions from those early days- songs before they were polished, before we knew where those roots would take us. There will be a limited vinyl pressing available, along with the release on all digital platforms. The vinyl run is small and once it’s gone, it’s gone. Preorders are live now: Over the last year, playing these songs again has brought us back to the beginning, to that feeling of possibility. And there’s way more coming soon. More dates, More nights to celebrate what this record has meant to us, and hopefully to you. Thank you for growing with us. Thank you for staying.
