Been having difficulty developing muscle memory for knowing where the 'rename' option is in Windows 11. Now I know why.

Everyone is responding in how to handle this correctly but the real takeaway here is that a trillion dollar company can't even figure out tech that worked for 30 years. Grim.

Yeah exactly that. Imagine bug testing anything else and getting the feedback 'just don't do that lol'

@eateroftrash this retard is a "tech guy" but has such a horrible context menu and definitely does not how to fix it or install programs without having to do extra steps to remove bloat. IQ Estimated at probably 91

@eateroftrash Thankfully IQ is a meaningless metric

What a huge fucking UX fail. Just complete failure to maintain consistent patterns for basic tasks.

All the comments here saying "download a different program" or "press F2"... Just wait until your door gets stuck and your neighbour goes "You have a perfectly functional window, just use that."

dude just press F2

Didn't you make a video about this exact problem when Win11 first released? haha

3kliksphilip's profile picture
3kliksphilip1 year ago

Sort of. The order of the icons at the top kept jumping about randomly to prevent muscle memory. Here, that icon stuff sometimes doesn't even appear and it affects what's shown further down the list

That looks and sounds like a nightmare to deal with. I used the setting to automatically use the old menu and never went back. Just seems easier to me

I changed it on my machine so that I only get the old context menu (the one that appears if you click on more options at the bottom.) cause I had the same issue.

I hate how everyone just keeps recommending F2 instead of admitting the Windows 11 context menu is bad and needs serious fixes to replace the OG menu.

Same thing for buttons in Google search. It tries to guess what is most related to your search and then shuffles the buttons around. Mind bogglingly bad UX

I despise the menu changes in windows 11. But if you want a quicker way that works on any version of windows, click the item and press f2.

good old f2 fixes that but its stupid that u HAVE to use a keybind for consistency, hoping to see this fixed before windows 15

cause that context menu in win 11 is ass? Yeah disable that shit in registry immediately. Fucking hate everything about Win 11 and forced to use it for my job.

There is a program called winaero tweaked that supposedly brings back the old right click menu as one of the options. It basically is a GUI for registry changes.

Or just press F2. But yeah, their menus are bonkers. If you hit right click to quickly together, you get this; I'm not sure what's wrong with the second menu. I mostly end up using that. The rest are easier with the Windows shortcut keys.

You can disable the new context menus btw. One of the first things I do on any new install

Windows 11 is terrible. I mainly use Linux, but i still use windows for gaming. I will not install windows 11. So either I'll run a broken os, but i hope that steam os 3 will be released soon

The first thing I did when I installed windows 11 was get a mod to force the old right click menu to show up every time. The new one is so inconsistant 😭

Shift + right click will always display the old menu. I just do this without thinking now, to the point that I forget the new menu exists.

I have been using Windows since 3.1. The downgrade over time has been astonishing. Microsoft peaked with Windows XP, Windows 7 was a great replacement for XP but ever since then its been a slow death of windows.

hold shift while right clicking or get 'Winaero Tweaker' and enable classic full context menu (

I hate this menu in Win11. I also have problems developing muscle memory for it. I rather click on "show more options" (or what its called) to get the win10 style back.
