This is Brendel playing the opening couple minutes from Schubert’s piano sonata in A Major - the Andantino, second movement, which itself is in F Sharp Minor, marking a dramatic shift in mood from the opening movement. It’s easy to follow as it’s in ternary form ABA - some opening music (what you hear in this clip) followed by some contrasting music, and a return to the primary theme. It’s been a strange and rough week on the international stage, locally with criminal doxxing - and I’ve had my own bumps. I like to sit in the dark and listen to music when I want to calm down and realize whatever is going on - things will be ok. This is the complete slow section of Beethoven’s 8th Piano Sonata. Everyone familiar with classical era music will know it already. People who don’t listen to this music probably have heard it on TV or excerpts in a film. It’s a good movement to teach someone ‘Rondo form’ because it’s so easy to follow. You will hear the main theme right up front for over a minute - and then two more times. In between you will hear two departing episodes that exist to make the movement more interesting. But this is very easy to follow, is beautiful - and it’s a courtesy of a great composer to his audience. And if you’ve had a rough day or week - it will hit the spot.

Personal favorite section of Beethoven 5 is the coda to the opening sonata form movement. The concluding music that takes the ‘fate motive’ and gives you one last electric shock. Maybe having such things in my head is why I’ve never used cocaine.

This is the opening section of the Brahms clarinet sonata in F minor. Here you get the themes of the first movement. Chamber music is nice and interesting because you hear instruments like the clarinet in their full glory - not just as a component of the orchestra, drowned out by strings. Different instruments can hit the f minor pitch, but they all do it with their own timbre - that’s the individuality of the instrument, and you get to experience that in works like this. And someone like Brahms can work out smaller ideas with just a piano and clarinet that he might use later in larger symphonic works. It’s a more intimate form of music because it’s going to be played in a smaller room with fewer listeners, but also because the composer might be trying out something out that isn’t necessarily ready for the big stage. In all events, the opening theme has a haunting quality to it I like this time of year, when it’s rainy and dark. Full link in next post.

This is an obsessively political time for good reason - so let’s cut that with a little music. Here you will see/hear Bach’s fugue in C Minor from his Well-Tempered Clavier. Fugue is a good intro to classical music because it consists of a simple theme, repeated in different voices, with variations - all going on at the same time. So there is clarity, but also complexity. You have to pay attention - and when you sit back and listen, it’s like it’s playing you. You can feel a tip/tap in your head. It’s the kind of thing that takes your mind over, as you here the initial fugue theme, and then you hear how the composer uses it - I think one of the main reasons mediation never became a thing in Western culture until recently is because of this form of tightly constructed art - which could bring our minds to other places and provide the same relief that people now get in Rochester, with someone smacking him with a stick while he sits closed-eyed in the lotus position. Strongly encourage anyone who likes this piece to get a recording of the entire well-tempered clavier.

Let’s do a little Sunday Beethoven. When asked what his favorite symphony was, B said it was Eroica - his third. It was a revolutionary work at the time that stretched the genre. This clip I’ve given you was personal to him. The Eroica tells a story of a hero and his struggle - originally dedicated to Napoleon, but probably more about B himself. This music comes from the development section of the first movement, has a hint of a fugue which explodes into a crisis, and then a new subdued theme emerges. Probably it tracks B’s own feeling that he needed to renew himself after the realization he was losing his hearing. I think this is very relatable. You go through life, things don’t go how you want - and you have to pivot, recreate yourself from time to time. I think this is what this music is about.

I like this piece because it’s one of the first works Beethoven published, and blows up the idea that he had fixed ‘periods’ of composing. Usually people talk of an early imitative period, a middle ‘heroic period’ with works like Eroica and Symphony 5, and then a ‘late period.’ This work is an ‘early’ work that sounds like it came 10 years later in the heroic period. In other words - Beethoven was experimenting. Haydn actually thought this work was too advanced for the Viennese audience, and recommended against promoting it. But it’s quintessential Beethoven. And it’s in C Minor - the key most closely associated with him. Another interesting point - Beethoven experimented with the trio because he wanted a genre that wasn’t well trod. He waited on string quartets because Haydn and Mozart had perfected them - he wanted some ground that was his own. Tells you about his approach, his desire to learn from others but stake out his own ground.

I’ve been following this phenomenon for a while. I have no idea what to make of it but when you see the sky get that black at 3:30 in the afternoon on a sunny day AND you hear what sounds like loud trumpets in the sky…It means something.. I’m not sure what. I don’t know if it’s biblical or if it’s something our government is doing, but I know what it sounds like to me . It’s been happening all over the world . I’d love to hear your opinions on this.

There is something truly remarkable about the third movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2. It is one of the most famous piano movements in the world. Yet if we try to find a simple melody that can be easily hummed, we may notice something fascinating: this movement is not built around a memorable melody in the usual sense. There is no long, gentle singing line. There is no simple theme that immediately settles into the listener’s memory. Instead, Beethoven creates a world of intense motion: notes rushing forward without rest, powerful chords filled with tension, and waves of sound constantly rising and colliding with one another. So what gives this movement such extraordinary vitality after more than two centuries? The answer does not lie in how many notes Beethoven wrote. It lies in the way he transformed the smallest elements into a tremendous source of energy. Beethoven did not write this movement merely for listeners to remember a melody. He wrote it so they could feel a force in motion. From the very first notes of the Presto agitato, Beethoven draws the listener into a world without rest. The broken chords of C-sharp minor (C♯–E–G♯) continuously move across the keyboard. Taken individually, these notes are not extraordinary. This week’s music post is the Bach Violin Concerto in E Major. Baroque era music is a good entry point to ‘classical music’ because it is relatively easy to follow. This excerpt from the opening movement is in ritornello form, which means it is monothematic. Bach gives you the major idea/theme up front, and then he plays with it the entire time. The audience always knows what is going on. They have the theme clearly in their heads, and then they hear variations on it with brief divergent ideas and moves into different key areas. The audience never needs to know the technical details, because the twists and turns are obvious and intuitive. It’s very easy on the listener, yet complex in composition. Street pianos often rely on baroque era pieces for this exact reason. The listener who might drop some $$ into the basket doesn’t need to have been there from the beginning to understand. S/he can just show up and jump in because it’s one idea and some elaboration on it. Anyway - I will link this entire piece in the following post. It’s in 3 movements - all easy to follow. (Some of my musical friends are dim on Hillary Hahn - and maybe they’re right. But this is good enough for us, and video draws in more listeners than blank audio).
