Should Poland reclaim Lviv (Lwów) which now belongs to Ukraine? The city was the Polish center of cultural gravity for centuries. It had belonged to Poland since the Piast dynasty: in 1349, King Casimir the Great (the last Piast monarch) incorporated Lviv into the Kingdom of Poland, making it the capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship. For over 400 years under the Polish Crown and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Lwów flourished as one of the most important Polish cities, a vibrant hub of science, literature, theater, and education, home to the famous Lwów School of Mathematics and countless Polish writers, artists, and scholars. We lost it in 1939 when the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland under the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact. After World War II, the Yalta and Potsdam conferences confirmed the city’s transfer to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the Polish population was largely resettled westward. The war in Ukraine is a grave regional conflict involving Slavic nations - Russia and Ukraine - with profound implications for Poland. Its resolution will ultimately require direct dialogue among those nations that share historical, cultural, and regional understanding. As "constitutional constraints" reportedly prevent my Polish colleagues Radek Sikorski and Karol Nawrocki from joining the Council, I respectfully offer my ad interim readiness to contribute to the Council’s work related to the #UkraineRussiaWar, including efforts supporting dialogue with President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Vladimir Putin. Polish minister of foreign affairs, Radosław Sikorski laid out the facts of a ‘Polexit’ perfectly. You can't argue with that list of consequences. It’s game over for the 'Polexit' crowd. “Weigh your words, because they have consequences. I hope for some basic seriousness, especially among people who sometimes consider themselves the only patriots. If we were to leave the European Union today, a Polish farmer would not receive subsidies, would not be able to export his produce without bureaucracy. A Polish musician would have to ask for a work visa to perform a concert in the European Union. A Polish student would not be in the Erasmus program. A Polish producer of anything would face a tariff barrier in the south of Poland and on the Oder river. 74% of our exports go to the European Union. Is that really what you wish for the Poles?” he said. Brilliant move to hit the Polish right wing where it hurts: the economy and everyday life. Subsidies, trade barriers, Erasmus... he put it in terms everyone gets. Who else than Sikorski can deliver a political uppercut like that? A Polish producer of anything would face a tariff barrier in the south of Poland and on the Oder river. 74% of our exports go to the European Union. Is that really what you wish for the Poles?” he said. Brilliant move to hit the Polish right wing where it hurts: the economy and everyday life. Subsidies, trade barriers, Erasmus... he put it in terms everyone gets. Who else than Sikorski can deliver a political uppercut like that? Mykhailo Tkach, a journalist of Ukrainska Pravda media, went to the Polish border and conducted an investigation to find out the scale of trade turnover between Poland and Belarus. It turned out that while Ukrainian agricultural products are blocked at the border, Poland pays hundreds of millions to companies from Russia and Belarus for seeds, oil and animal feed. ▪️ Poland trades with Russia and Belarus, while Ukraine is banned even from transit. Ukrainian agricultural exports to Poland fell by 40% last year. In August, amid protests, Poland banned imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine, and in September, it added rapeseed cake and meal, corn bran, wheat flour and derivatives. Since April 2023, Ukrainian grain has been going through Poland only in transit. Despite this, protests at the border continue. There are about 6 thousand cars in line to leave Ukraine for Poland, and another 2 thousand to enter Poland Imports of agricultural products from Russia to Poland in 2023 reached $117 and exceeded the level of 2021, i.e. the level before the full-scale war. Poland purchased $55 million from Lukashenko, which also exceeds the profits of previous years. ▪️ "Disservice" to ourselves Poland not only continues to trade with the aggressor state and its satellite, but also increases imports of agricultural products. The situation already shows that the Poles have done a "disservice" to themselves, because Polish grain has been displaced by Russian grain on foreign markets. Russia, in turn, has increased its exports by stealing Ukrainian grain, among other things. ▪️ Playing on dislike of Ukrainians Some Polish pro-Russian politicians purposefully make Ukrainians public enemies. They are allegedly destroying the Polish economy and have allegedly been ungrateful in response to Poles' help after the Russian invasion. However, it is worth realizing that refusal to cooperate with Ukraine will deprive Polish farmers themselves of many opportunities. I think it’s time to end this masquerade - at least here in the US. Poland has not had a legitimately elected president since 2020. Out of roughly 12 million Polish Americans, Nawrocki received only 28,070 votes. There are also serious allegations about Nawrocki’s past, including claims that while working as a security guard at the Grand Hotel in Gdańsk, he was involved in operating as a pimp. He was put forward by Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the PiS establishment, as “bait” for the nationalist movement - a movement that both post-communist political camps, which have ruled Poland for the past 20 years, distanced themselves from long ago amid corruption scandals, election fraud, nepotism, and widespread misuse of public funds on a scale not seen since the Stalin era.
