Just after 11:30 Wednesday night, the FDNY responded to a 5-alarm fire at 481 Van Brunt Street in Brooklyn. Units arrived in under three minutes. Over 250 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. Two firefighters were transported with minor injuries. “This building is a very large, four story commercial building. Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on the second, third, fourth floor, and through the roof. Due to the amount of fire and the structural stability of the building, we removed our members and attacked the fire from the exterior, from the front and the rear with large caliber streams. The rear of this building is on the water, so we called in Marine 9, and we used some of their large caliber streams to extinguish the fire,” said Chief of Operations Kevin Woods. FDNY Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Probationary Firefighter Joseph Downey prepared most of his life for Thursday, when he walked across the stage at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn and joined the FDNY as a third-generation firefighter. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Chief of Rescue Operations Joseph Downey, and his late grandfather, legendary FDNY Deputy Chief Raymond Downey, who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001. Graduating from the Fire Academy isn't just the start of Downey's career. It's the continuation of a family legacy.

Riches joined the department in 2006, following the path of his father, retired Deputy Chief James Riches, and three brothers, including Firefighter Jimmy Riches, who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001, just a day shy of his 30th birthday.

Many who join Trotskyite organisations do so out of a sincere desire to bring about revolution in Britain. In recognition of this fact, we must be relentless in our critique of the leaders of the Trotskyite organisations but open to discussion with their members, many of whom can be reached with our party’s message and won over to it. Yet the Trotskites are always and everywhere on the side of the imperialism politically. They agree on Ukraine. They agreed on the questions of Korea and Vietnam. They agree on Palestine and Syria. They objectively lead workers back toward the Labour Party, or into despondency and away from politics altogether. They have a century of history of working as the direct political agents of the imperialists in the working class movement. It would be foolish to imagine that so useful and well funded a ‘trend’ was not directly linked with the ruling class. Read the excellent motion here
