Before Humphrey Bogart's performance, the notorious detective Sam Spade was introduced in the pulp magazine "Black Mask," then later published as a novel which would lead to John Huston's THE MALTESE FALCON ('41) – one of the greatest noirs of all time. See it tonight at 8pm ET.

"Made me think of early Pynchon and of Neal Stephenson at his best. The most interesting novel I’ve read in a long time."

The book had also been brought to the screen twice before, first in 1931 with Ricardo Cortez as Spade, and the second time under the title SATAN MET A LADY (1936) with Warren William in the role.

Love the gay angle in the film. Peter Lorre wearing Gardenia. Elisha Cook jr also gay character and Sydney Greenstreet.

I loved this movie and all the great character actors, but I always get miffed that no one ever mentions Lee Patrick! She absolutely epitomizes the Gal Friday and is way better than Gladys George!
