ECLAMPSIA: ONE OF THE MOST DREADED IN PREGNANCY AND LABOUR. DO NOT WAIT TO HAVE SEIZURES AT HOME BEFORE YOU TREAT THAT RAISED BLOOD PRESSURE IN PREGNANCY Walk with me... Will you? ...Long read. When Danger Whispers Before It Screams: Eclampsia, and the Women We Are Still Losing Dear Women and Men, My dearies, no pregnant woman should convulse before we care, and this is not poetry, this is policy, this is science, this is humanity. When I watched that video, a woman convulsing in pregnancy, I felt my heart splinter, just a little, because I have stood in that room before, and I have fought that fight, and I have watched a shaking body argue with death. It is never sudden. It only looks sudden to those who arrive at the last sentence without reading the earlier chapters. That lifeless stare, that chaos of limbs, that trembling cry, it is the final paragraph of a story that could have been rewritten much earlier, and much more gently. We call it eclampsia, a name that sounds almost elegant, and yet it is one of pregnancy’s most ruthless murderers. It is what happens when blood pressure rises and rises, and then decides it wants more, more damage, more danger, more destruction. The brain rebels, the liver strains, the kidneys falter, and the woman, the woman who is carrying life, begins to lose herself. Sometimes it announces itself with blurred vision, and sometimes with swelling feet we excuse, and sometimes with a headache that drums and drums and refuses to be ignored. And then, suddenly, the body convulses, and the room fills with panic, and everyone asks, How did this happen? But before eclampsia, there is pre-eclampsia, and it is quiet, and deceptive, and almost polite. It comes with numbers slightly raised, with symptoms easily dismissed, with discomfort we normalize because women are taught to endure. We say, It’s stress, and It’s pregnancy, and It will pass. And we forget that danger rarely knocks loudly; it prefers to whisper first. And so we miss it. And then we mourn it. This is why antenatal care is not ceremony, not routine, not something to be postponed. It is a rescue mission. When a blood pressure cuff tightens around your arm, and when urine is tested for protein, it is not box-ticking, it is listening. It is watching. It is standing between a whisper and a scream. It is the difference between prevention and tragedy. So, my dear women, do not wait for your body to convulse before you seek help. Do not cradle pain in silence, and do not let culture, or fear, or false reassurance convince you that everything will be fine. Sometimes it will not unless we act, and unless we care, and unless we pay attention. Because truly, no pregnant woman should die. Not in a world that has magnesium sulphate to still the storm. Not when blood pressure can be controlled and babies can be delivered safely. Not when knowledge exists, and care can save both mother and child. And so, when next you see that video, do not scroll past, and do not sigh and move on. Let it interrupt you. Let it remind you to check a blood pressure, to attend that appointment, to insist on care. Let it remind you that antenatal care is not only about the baby, it is about the woman carrying life itself. Because eclampsia is not destiny, and it is not punishment, and it is not inevitable. It is preventable. And no pregnant woman should convulse before we care.

From being called names like “tirin-gbeku, flat screen, sim card, dry bone, dry fish, this one go get womb so,” in school to developing a body image issue. Tried gym in 2020 to get round in specific places (lol) to 2022 pregnancy that led to gestational hypertension and drastic weight gain and an emergency c-section. Just a week after my operation, I had to visit my baby in the nicu everyday for almost three months. No rest, less sleep, had to eat even when I didn’t want to, to produce milk (Nurses put fear in me that Adrian would not do well if I don’t give breast milk) My weight kept going up till I got to 110kg. I’ve never been this way, I did not know how to cope. I tried gym again, developed phantom pain in my c-section area. Lmfaoo. February, my man proposed, I was trolled. Some called out my body, (You don get belle for the second pikin, na now dem just propose give you and you dey post am.” Others said “you go say no before?” Everyday on X, I must get “See this fat bitch.” Depression set it. Took my baby to school one day, stood at the side of the road and started visualizing having a quick death by a truck or something. I cried home and told my partner. This man that did not care the slightest about how I looked, but wanted me to be okay… Long story sha, my two-month of 6 months journey to getting my life back. I just want to encourage every mom out there that has gone through drastic body changes after birth. You are not ugly and if you want, you can do something about it. Take your time and make sure your babies are okay. My child will be 3 next month and he’s amazing. Don’t let anyone shame you or your body that brought out that beautiful baby. I spent so much time feeling guilty about what people had to say about me than about what I thought about myself and what my partner thought. The actual “before you” below.

If diabetes is the joke, what is the punchline? Gracie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 1, not through eating too many sweets or chocolate but because her body decided to attack the cells of the pancreas. Unfortunately Easter is normally a prime time for jokes from all sorts of people linking indulgence and sweets with the condition. Jokes are often seen as harmless, however they perpetuate the stigma and misunderstanding of serious conditions, in this case diabetes. Diabetes in general is a condition where a person is unable to handle the breakdown products of carbohydrates (sugar) in a way a non-diabetic person would. This is important because the cells in our body rely on sugar to get energy, but this has to be done in a controlled way. People with diabetes have an issue with insulin specifically. There are many different types of diabetes including gestational diabetes, which is seen in pregnancy, and steroid induced diabetes, which is brought on by medications. The two most well-known types however are type 1 and type 2. What doesn’t cause diabetes is eating too much chocolate! It ranges from your genetics to viral loads and even your vitamin D levels! In 2012, diabetes in total was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths globally. Often, it can be deadly before you’ve even released you are diabetic! What is more worrying when seeing public figures making jokes about diabetes is that there is increasing evidence of significant mental health concerns within children with type 1 diabetes with nearly 40% of type 1 diabetic children seeking assistance from mental health support teams. Gracie has completely owned her condition, playing sports and even going on TV. Diabetes hasn't stopped her doing anything she wants and won't stop her from eating chocolate eggs today! #foryou #fyp #chocolate #diabetes #type1diabetes #type2diabetes #Easter #easteregg #ysk #easteregg #t1d #type1warrior
