Before the costumes… before the choreography… before anyone called it entertainment… There was a man alone on a wooden floor, answering the fiddle with nothing but his feet. They called it buck dancing. Born from African rhythms carried across the ocean, mixed with Irish step and Appalachian survival. It... show more

"Born from African rhythms" - the African spawn for music is a terrible myth. The Scotch/Irish spawned the music and it was copied by slaves.

I always thought the Appalachians came from Scotland mostly

@FFT1776 Irish step was banned by the English so the Irish took doors off their houses & danced under the moonlight when the British troops were asleep. Irish dance has nothing to do with African dance.

@TeamTrump47 It’s very Irish.

The wooden board in that clip is the whole point—buck dancing was never meant for stages. It grew out of porch floors and kitchen boards where African rhythms and Irish steps met Appalachian life, turning pure necessity into living history that clogging later dressed up for the crowd. My great great grandpa and my great great uncle used to do that on the front porch. It was so cool to watch.

Pretty sure it had nothing to do with African rhythms, you just happen to throw that in there

@gaye_gallops I call it Appalachian tap dancing 🕺

@BredsguardDalen Wrong- this is not from Africa. This style dance and music was born in the Smoky Mountains of Appalachia, 100% authentic American culture and heritage.

@ShannanD7 These musicians didn't realize at the time that they helped shape music.

This hits different. Raw, grounded, and full of soul—buck dancing feels like history talking through the feet.

Clogging dance originated in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States during the late 1700s. It developed as a melting pot of European folk dances—such as English, Scottish, and Irish step dancing—blended with African American buck dancing and Native American footwork.

D. White is the father of “Jessco White” D. White knowed 52 steps.

Born from Irish 'jig' the Appalachian people now call it clogging.

@wickedcece315 I thought it came from Ireland.

The old Appalachians borrowed nothing from Africans. Most had zero contacts with Africans.

I wouldn't mind learning this. I grew up with Irish music and dance but im American and will be living in rural America. Id love to be able to get up and do that particularly as the music I'll be around won't be Irish anymore but more along the lines of that in the video.

So much history So interesting 🤔

I did not know that women had tattoos back then.

African Irish? African? Really?

Buck dancing - the original breakdancing!

Do I see the foreshadowing of the "Moon Walk"?

This is pure Irish, there is no African in it.

It had nothing to do with African anything. It was a mix of British folk styles.

Dude. Just comply. There’s not a cop in history that held court on the concrete. We get it. Trust me. Every American is with you on this one. • It’s sucks being pulled over. • It sucks getting a ticket. • it sucks getting a fine. • it sucks going to court. • it sucks having a warrant. • it sucks going to jail. Whatever the case may be. But when the police ask you to step out of the vehicle, you are stepping out of the vehicle one way or another. Ask me how I know.
