The task force is a good idea, but enforcement is the real test. If landlords can still demand whatever they want without consequences, the six-month rule means very little.

Igbo Woman: Help us, Yoruba landlords refused to rent their houses to us Igbos in Lagos. I went to 10 houses and 9 said no to Igbo. People in her comment section were telling her it's the result of the Yoruba hate that Igbos are doing online. Igbos will come online and lie that they have bought all Yoruba houses and land finished, Denigrating Yorubas, so how come Igbos are still the ones crying that Yoruba landlords are not renting houses to them if they have bought it all? Igbos do not realise that their actions online are actually affecting their people offline. Also, Landlords are now aware that Igbos hardly pay rent once they rent a house. After the first year, that's it. They will frustrate the hell out of their landlords. One Igbo person will rent a house, and before the end of the year, there will be like 20 people in that house. I have done enough, and I am not moving to any hostel again. I cannot go around from hostel to hostel asking hostel owners to reduce their fees. A group of Ghanaian youth has called out landlords and landladies across the country for demanding rent advance payments exceeding six months, contrary to the provisions of Ghana’s Rent Control laws. According to them, the high cost of renting in Ghana has become unbearable, as tenants are often forced to raise huge sums to cover one or two years’ advance payments, a practice they say violates the law.

My dream is that every landlord is responsive to their tenants and that every landlord is following housing code. And I know that there are many landlords who are like that. The issue, however, is that there are a number of bad landlords who have been able to operate with impunity, with no consequences for their actions. And part of what this housing plan puts forward is specifically funding to ensure that we can hold these kinds of landlords accountable, and especially the top 10 worst landlords in New York City, so that we can actually start to explore all of the tools we need to transfer ownership of those properties to people who will actually steward them safely, whether they’re a nonprofit, a community land trust, or the tenants themselves. That is how we are looking at this because, frankly, this is the law, and for too long housing code has been treated like a suggestion, not a requirement.
