The first haul is still ore, and it needs processing before it's wire. Sulfide ore is milled, then smelted and refined. Oxide ore is often leached and doesn't go to a smelter, per USGS.

North America had a copper industry 9,000 years ago. But this is as early as utilitarian copper-tool production anywhere in the world. Around the Great Lakes, Indigenous communities mined nearly pure copper and transformed it into tools, weapons and ornaments. Thousands of ancient mining pits remain. One older estimate suggests that up to 1.5 billion pounds of copper ore was extracted across the Archaic period, although the true figure is unknown. Then, after thousands of years, practical copper-tool production declined. Technology does not always move in a straight line.
