#Ethiopia: University students to teach for one year before graduation as part of new initiative, education minister says University students will be required to teach for one year before graduation as part of a new initiative, Education Minister Birhanu Nega (PhD) has announced. "A program named 'Ethiopian University Service' has been prepared," he said, adding that it will allow students to "serve the community in their field of study before graduation." Speaking on April 02, 2025, at the House of People's Representatives' Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, Employment and Technology Affairs, Birhanu linked the program to the country's teacher shortage. "There is a shortage of over 100,000 teachers," he said, noting that the initiative is among several efforts to "address the severe shortage of qualified teachers widely observed in the country." He explained that students "will be paid for their basic expenses and required to teach for one year" before entering their fourth year. Watch!
