My old colleague in Beijing recently visited the Beijing World Trade Oriental Plaza （世贸天阶），located in a prime location near Tiananmen Square. He told me that 90% of the shops are gone. Malls used to have arcades full of video games, and in the early 1990s they were always super busy and jam packed. This is the TILT arcade at Fashion Island Mall in San Mateo in 1991. In ninth grade my friend Jason, who I used to skate with, bragged in class that he could drive a stick and that he could teach me too. It wasn’t in a real car, but on a sit-down racing game with a clutch at a place called TILT, which was at Fashion Island Mall in San Mateo. I begged my parents to let me go on a Friday night and they finally said yes, as long as I was home by ten. We skated there from El Camino in San Mateo and it felt like the longest ride of my life. That whole night was spent on the game, taking turns shifting through the gears like it meant something. I still remember it clearly, because it was the first time my parents let me stay out late, and at the time it felt like the best night I had ever had.

After two years of fear and noise, the silence feels strange. It’s not peace, but it’s something. The bombs stopped, for now, and I’m trying to bring a little joy back to the children. There are no therapists here, no programs to heal their minds, so I’m doing what I know best: cooking. After a long time without fruits, I finally managed to make something that includes them, something tasty and a bit nutritious too. It felt amazing seeing the kids enjoy it, especially my son Nizar, who’s now a year and a half old, tasting fruits for the first time. This video was filmed in a displaced people camp, and it means a lot to be cooking again in a place that finally feels a little safer. Today I made cereal in all kinds of wild mixes with fruits, sauces, and chocolate just to see them laugh again. It’s messy, funny, and full of heart.

I found an interesting video from when I was in Beijing three weeks ago that I had made. Nothing special as a video, except that it shows the juxtaposition of a portrait of Sun Yat-sen in the Square looking and directly at Chairman Mao. It’s fitting because they both hoped to create a republic and it seems that finally their dreams are coming true. 🇺🇸🇨🇳Modern China is grateful to both of them, one because he brought the thinking and tradition of the American system of Abraham Lincoln and the other because without him there would be no China today, he saved China from the imperialist Japanese.
