Ben Horowitz: Every founder experiences doubt — even Mark Zuckerberg “Congratulations on betting on yourself,” a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz tells an audience full of founders. “Your job is to make your bet payoff. You believed in yourself enough to do it, and there are going to be many times... when you question that bet. But that gets you nothing.” Ben offers the following advice: “You just have to do your thing, keep going, and focus on what you can do. The doubts are going to be there, but ignore the doubts. The worst doubts aren’t the ones people put on you; they’re the ones that you put on yourself. Every entrepreneur has them. I spent a lot of time with Mark Zuckerberg when he was 22 years old, and he had tremendous doubt about whether [Facebook] was going to make it. Everybody has that.” He continues: “It’s not what you feel. It’s what you do. So just focus on what you do. You’re going to feel scared. Ben Horowitz advice to CEOs “You want to be liked and respected in the long-run. Not the short-run.” “You have to be able to tell [your team] the truth in a way that you probably don’t tell most of your friends the truth,” the a16z co-founder explains. “Anthropologically, we want people to like us so we tell them what they want to hear. But on a company level or if your on the board of somebody’s company, you have to be able to tell them what they don’t want to hear. That’s the most important thing you’re going to say. And yes, they’re not going to like it when you say, but over time it can save the company.” Ben continues: “That’s what leadership is about. If everybody agrees with the decision, then you didn’t add any value, because they would’ve done that without you. The only value you ever add is when you make a decision that most people don’t like, and that’s where leadership comes in… That’s the thing that takes practice.” He gives Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang as an example: “When Jensen talks about how you have to get to near-death to get yourself to do that, I think that’s true. a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz: “Don’t follow your passion” Ben gives this advice to the Columbia University class of 2015: “Don’t follow your passion. Now I know you’re probably thinking: ‘That’s a really dumb idea because if you poll 1,000 people who are successful, they’ll all say they love what they do. And so the broad conclusion of the world is that if you do what you love, then you’ll be successful.’ But we’re engineers, so we know that might be true. It also might be the case that if you’re successful, you love what you do — you just love being successful, everybody loves you, it’s awesome. So which one is it?” He continues: “The first tricky thing about passions is they’re hard to prioritize. Are you more passionate about math or engineering? Are you more passionate about history or literature? Are you more passionate about video games or K-pop? These are tough decisions. How do you even know? On the other hand, what are you good at? Are you better at math or writing? That’s a much easier thing to figure out. The second thing that’s tricky if you’re going forward in time with this ‘follow your passion’ idea is that what you’re passionate about at 21 is not necessarily what you’re going to be passionate about at 40. Now this is true for boyfriends, as well as career choices. The third issue with following your passion is that you’re not necessarily good at your passion. Has anybody ever watched American Idol? So you know what I’m talking about. Just because you love singing doesn’t mean you should be a professional singer. And then finally, and most importantly, following your passion is a very ‘me-centered’ view of the world. And when you go through life, what you’ll find is that what you take out of the world — money, cars, stuff, accolades — is much less important than what you put into the world. And so my recommendation would be to follow your contribution. Find the thing that you’re great at, put that into the world, contribute to others, help the world be better. Palmer Luckey’s advice for founder-led communications “My advice to people would probably be to recognize that the value of your reputation is very high,” Anduril founder Palmer Luckey begins. “If people do not trust you; if they do not believe in what you’re saying; if they do not think that you’re a person worth listening to, they’re going to have a hard time working with you.” Palmer also argues that founders don’t need to be neutral: “You don’t need to be neutral. You can be a propagandist. You can advocate for a particular point of view . . . Integrity, honesty, and so forth - everybody has them in certain situations. But that’s not the question. The question is if it’s going to cost you your company, do you have your integrity? If it’s going to cost you your job, are you honest? If it’s going to completely embarrass you in front of everybody, do you have it then? Ben Horowitz: “Do not expect life to be fair. It will only defeat you.” The Andreessen Horowitz co-founder is asked for advice that he has found useful in his own life. Ben responds: “The thing that I would say has had the biggest effect on me is something my father said to me years ago: ‘Life isn’t fair.’ That advice seems really simple, but the thing I’ve seen that defeats people more than any other thing in life is the expectation of some fairness.” He continues: “There are all kinds of things that are going to happen to you that don’t happen to other people and are completely unfair. But it doesn’t matter because that’s the way it is. And as soon as you can get that idea out of your mind [that life should be fair], you can just deal with it… ‘What should I do now?’ is the real question — not ‘How do I go back and get people to be fair?’… Life’s not fair. You’re still working at it but you don’t get to perform. .Keith Rabois on the most important lesson he learned from Peter Thiel: You can’t hire anybody over 30. “Peter might not say it exactly the same way today, but basically, what he was trying to say is this: by the time you’re 30, everyone on the planet knows how to assess you pretty accurately. There are enough data points on your resume—back then, it was your resume, and today, it’s your LinkedIn profile—so that everybody can come to a consensus view about your abilities. But if you come to a consensus view about everybody’s abilities, guess what? Google is going to spend a lot of money on that person. Or OpenAI is going to spend a lot of money on that person. Or Meta is going to spend a lot of money on that person. And, when you’re a startup, you can’t outspend large companies that are very profitable or have infinite money like OpenAI. You need to be much more disciplined, much more frugal, and you may not even want to hire these people. The people who are motivated by that much compensation may not even be the right builders. I took that advice with me literally from November 2000, and I’ve been trying to apply it for 24 years now.”

You hire every person you know who you think is good and respect. You raise money from people. You go sign up customers, and those customers depend on you to succeed. It’s a lot of pressure. But you don’t actually know what you’re doing. You’ve never been a CEO. You’ve never run a big organization.” Ben continues: “You know everyone’s depending on you. And all you do is work, so you don’t have any life outside of this, and your life is basically over if this company fails. And you don’t know [if your decisions] are the right thing to do — you only think it. And then you have people around you telling you, ‘No, it’s not the right thing to do.’ So how do you trust your eyes and trust what you think, then go do it? It’s a very difficult problem.” “This is where I see CEOs fail all the time,” Ben says. They think they know what the right thing to do is, but they don’t act on it. Brian Armstrong on the importance of disagreeableness if you want to do important things “What I’ve realized about a lot of people who I think are building important things in the world is that they’ve developed this high disagreeableness muscle where they’ve recognized that they’re not going to make everybody happy and they’ve made peace with it.” He gives Mark Zuckerberg as an example. “They realized at a certain point that whether I do the thing that I think everyone’s going to like or the thing that is more authentic to me, someone’s going to be pissed no matter what .So at the end of the day, I’m just going to do the thing that I think is right. And they’ve leaned more into authenticity instead of trying to say what they think people want to hear. And that does require you to have thick skin and some kind of high disagreeableness. And then they can actually do even more interesting stuff because they’re being themselves instead of trying to be liked.” This is something Brian himself is even trying to work on. And of course there are limits — you don’t want to get to a place where you’re listening to nobody. You want people around you have your best interest at heart and to listen to them. All of you are usable by God. There is not one of you that is not usable if you're only willing to submit. We all fall short. It's a matter of who is willing. Here I am, Lord, send me. That's what Isaiah said. Here I am. Send me. You are all usable. When a lot of you out there go, well, what can I do for God in my life? There's a lot you can do. If you're only willing to be picked up as an instrument in his Hands and implemented the way you were created to move. Many of you are operating outside the realm of what you were created to be. And in this season, that's going to be reconciled. And many of you are going to change course in this season drastically. Because you're in jobs, you're in areas, you're doing things, you were not created to do. You have gifts for it, but you weren’t created to do it. And there's going to be massive shifts in many of your lives and a sudden turn. And the Lord is going to realign. And this is going to be quick when He does it. Realign you into the position, redirect you and put you on that course because time is short and He needs you operating in what you were created to do. He needs that right now. And many of you are going to enter that process in this season. So praise the Lord because you are. You will enter that process and you will be redirected. And you will do what is written about you in the books of heaven, what you were created to do on this earth. Because many of you know and feel uncomfortable and know you're not in your call. You know you are just trying to try to endure, you're trying to survive. And it's because you're not in your call. Surrender to God, allow Him to redirect you into your call and your purpose that you were beautifully created to do. Because it's needed in this season and we cannot dilly dally anymore and go dabbling in things we are not created to do. It's time for us to go to work and it's time for us to be willing to go there.
