The only way you have it then is if you have courage.” Ben continues: “Courage ends up being the foundation for a lot of what we need in an entrepreneur. I always say you need two things. You need great intelligence and great courage. And I always found as an entrepreneur my courage was tested far more than my intelligence. a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz: “Don’t follow your passion” Ben gives this advice to the Columbia University class of 2015: “Don’t follow your passion. Now I know you’re probably thinking: ‘That’s a really dumb idea because if you poll 1,000 people who are successful, they’ll all say they love what they do. And so the broad conclusion of the world is that if you do what you love, then you’ll be successful.’ But we’re engineers, so we know that might be true. It also might be the case that if you’re successful, you love what you do — you just love being successful, everybody loves you, it’s awesome. So which one is it?” He continues: “The first tricky thing about passions is they’re hard to prioritize. Are you more passionate about math or engineering? Are you more passionate about history or literature? Are you more passionate about video games or K-pop? These are tough decisions. How do you even know? On the other hand, what are you good at? Are you better at math or writing? That’s a much easier thing to figure out. The second thing that’s tricky if you’re going forward in time with this ‘follow your passion’ idea is that what you’re passionate about at 21 is not necessarily what you’re going to be passionate about at 40. Now this is true for boyfriends, as well as career choices. The third issue with following your passion is that you’re not necessarily good at your passion. Has anybody ever watched American Idol? So you know what I’m talking about. Just because you love singing doesn’t mean you should be a professional singer. And then finally, and most importantly, following your passion is a very ‘me-centered’ view of the world. And when you go through life, what you’ll find is that what you take out of the world — money, cars, stuff, accolades — is much less important than what you put into the world. And so my recommendation would be to follow your contribution. Find the thing that you’re great at, put that into the world, contribute to others, help the world be better. Ben Horowitz: “Do not expect life to be fair. It will only defeat you.” The Andreessen Horowitz co-founder is asked for advice that he has found useful in his own life. Ben responds: “The thing that I would say has had the biggest effect on me is something my father said to me years ago: ‘Life isn’t fair.’ That advice seems really simple, but the thing I’ve seen that defeats people more than any other thing in life is the expectation of some fairness.” He continues: “There are all kinds of things that are going to happen to you that don’t happen to other people and are completely unfair. But it doesn’t matter because that’s the way it is. And as soon as you can get that idea out of your mind [that life should be fair], you can just deal with it… ‘What should I do now?’ is the real question — not ‘How do I go back and get people to be fair?’… Life’s not fair. Ben Horowitz to startup CEOs: “There’s always an answer” Ben recalls Business Week writing a cover story about his company Loudcloud titled “The IPO from Hell.” The Red Herring wrote an article speculating that Ben was taking the company’s cash and setting it on fire in his parking lot. “These things hurt my feelings… But most of the stress doesn’t come so much from what people in the press and people on Twitter think. It’s more how people in the company start to feel about it. You’ve brought all these people in. They believed in you. Things aren’t going as sold. And you feel that, and it’s going badly. And then it’s amplified if they read that you suck in the press, as they did about me many times.” He continues: “I didn’t care that they said I was an idiot. What bothered me was people who work for me would go home and their spouse would go, ‘You know your CEO is an idiot? I just read it here in Business Week.’” As an entrepreneur, Ben had never really found a great outlet for this. He vented to his friend Bill Campbell who had similar experiences running a company called Go. But that didn’t help that much: “We’d talk about it and he would understand, but it didn’t help that much. It’s still a struggle. It’s still difficult. You just have to focus your mind on what you can do… You can’t focus on what’s going wrong and what that might imply.” He recalls an idea from Peter Thiel’s class on startups: “He says there are people who believe in statistics — they believe there are probabilities, that things happen, and all you can do is run a process and it is what it is… And then there are people who believe in calculus, and they believe there’s a right answer. If you’re a startup CEO, you have to believe in calculus. Box CEO Aaron Levie’s 5 lessons for startup founders Lesson 1: Do something that wasn’t possible 3 years ago. “If you’re looking at a business opportunity that you could have done 5 or 10 years ago, it might be too late, or it might not be different enough to make a lot of people care. And that’s ultimately what it takes to scale. So look for new technologies that are enabling your solution. Box wasn’t possible in 2000. The enabling technology was cheaper storage, better browsers, more connected devices, faster internet.” Lesson 2: Do something you’re extremely passionate about. “Startups are very hard. There’s a lot of bad news that happens every single day. Bad things in the competitive space. Bad things with hiring. And you have to be able to push through. So you have to do something that’s actually really exciting, and that you’re going to be inspired about.” Lesson 3: Don’t compromise. “One of the coolest things about starting your own company is you get to make a lot of decisions. You don’t actually have to compromise or sacrifice on a lot of things. You don’t have to sacrifice on who you work with. You don’t have to compromise on how you’re going to do your marketing or how you’re going to build your technology… Ultimately, this is all in your control. you get to make these decisions and it’s a really exciting opportunity when you do.” Lesson 4: If you feel comfortable, you’re probably not doing it right. “There’s a lot of hard decisions that go into business. There are enough data points on your resume—back then, it was your resume, and today, it’s your LinkedIn profile—so that everybody can come to a consensus view about your abilities. But if you come to a consensus view about everybody’s abilities, guess what? Google is going to spend a lot of money on that person. Or OpenAI is going to spend a lot of money on that person. Or Meta is going to spend a lot of money on that person. And, when you’re a startup, you can’t outspend large companies that are very profitable or have infinite money like OpenAI. You need to be much more disciplined, much more frugal, and you may not even want to hire these people. The people who are motivated by that much compensation may not even be the right builders. I took that advice with me literally from November 2000, and I’ve been trying to apply it for 24 years now.”

Don’t Scroll—God Is Calling You to Submit and Move Praise the Lord that He has given us such a commission and such a call and we should be humbled by that and we should want to go out for His kingdom and do that. All of you are usable by God. There is not one of you that is not usable if you're only willing to submit. We all fall short. It's a matter of who is willing. Here I am, Lord, send me. That's what Isaiah said. Here I am. Send me. You are all usable. When a lot of you out there go, well, what can I do for God in my life? There's a lot you can do. If you're only willing to be picked up as an instrument in his Hands and implemented the way you were created to move. Many of you are operating outside the realm of what you were created to be. And in this season, that's going to be reconciled. And many of you are going to change course in this season drastically. Because you're in jobs, you're in areas, you're doing things, you were not created to do. You have gifts for it, but you weren’t created to do it. And there's going to be massive shifts in many of your lives and a sudden turn. And the Lord is going to realign. And this is going to be quick when He does it. Realign you into the position, redirect you and put you on that course because time is short and He needs you operating in what you were created to do. He needs that right now. And many of you are going to enter that process in this season. So praise the Lord because you are. You will enter that process and you will be redirected. And you will do what is written about you in the books of heaven, what you were created to do on this earth. Because many of you know and feel uncomfortable and know you're not in your call. You know you are just trying to try to endure, you're trying to survive. And it's because you're not in your call. Surrender to God, allow Him to redirect you into your call and your purpose that you were beautifully created to do. Because it's needed in this season and we cannot dilly dally anymore and go dabbling in things we are not created to do. It's time for us to go to work and it's time for us to be willing to go there.

Brian Armstrong on the importance of disagreeableness if you want to do important things “What I’ve realized about a lot of people who I think are building important things in the world is that they’ve developed this high disagreeableness muscle where they’ve recognized that they’re not going to make everybody happy and they’ve made peace with it.” He gives Mark Zuckerberg as an example. “They realized at a certain point that whether I do the thing that I think everyone’s going to like or the thing that is more authentic to me, someone’s going to be pissed no matter what .So at the end of the day, I’m just going to do the thing that I think is right. And they’ve leaned more into authenticity instead of trying to say what they think people want to hear. And that does require you to have thick skin and some kind of high disagreeableness. And then they can actually do even more interesting stuff because they’re being themselves instead of trying to be liked.” This is something Brian himself is even trying to work on. And of course there are limits — you don’t want to get to a place where you’re listening to nobody. You want people around you have your best interest at heart and to listen to them.
