Reassurance Is A Snack If you need your partner to remind you every day that they still want you, and the relief lasts about twenty minutes before the panic sneaks back, that's not you being clingy. But part of you is still running a background check on the person who already handed you the keys. None of it makes you broken. So instead of asking for the hundredth time, try this: wait ten minutes before you go fishing, ask for what you need straight instead of setting a trap, and build a life that's fully yours outside of them. Because the exit was never one more “you still want me?” It's finally believing them the first time.

Steve Jobs on how he learned to run a company: Question: "You're 21. You're a big success. You know, you've just sort of done it by the seat of your pants. You don't have any particular training in this. How do you learn to run a company?" Steve Jobs: "You know, throughout the years in business, I found something, which was that I always ask why you do things. And the answers you invariably get are, oh, that's just the way it's done. Nobody knows why they do what they do. Nobody thinks about things very deeply in business. That's what I found. I'll give you an example. When we were building our Apple I's in the garage, we knew exactly what they cost. When we got into a factory in the Apple II days, the accounting had this notion of a standard cost, where you'd kind of set a standard cost and at the end of a quarter you'd adjust it with a variance. And I kept asking, well, why do we do this? And the answer was, well, that's just the way it's done. And after about six months of digging into this, what I realized was the reason you do it is because you don't really have good enough controls to know how much it costs. So you guess, and then you fix your guess at the end of the quarter. And the reason you don't know how much it costs is because your information systems aren't good enough. But nobody said it that way. And so later on, when we designed this automated factory for Macintosh, we were able to get rid of a lot of these antiquated concepts and know exactly what something cost to the second. So in business, a lot of things are, I call it folklore. They're done because they were done yesterday and the day before. And so what that means is if you're willing to sort of ask a lot of questions and think about things and work really hard, you can learn business pretty fast. It's not the hardest thing in the world. It's not rocket science. It's not rocket science."

Jack Dorsey on becoming a better storyteller: "I found myself very early on thinking about something like thinking about this early idea for Twitter and saying to myself, I could build this awesome. You have those shower-like moments, or you're walking at midnight in some town in New York City, and you've got these amazing brand ideas. And then you start thinking, well, I could really start doing this if only X and if I had this person or if this technology existed or if this happened or this happened. And what I realized was that I was constantly making excuses for not working on it. And then the window had passed, and then I couldn't do anything. So I think it's really, really important to write it out or to draw it out or to code it. But you need to get it out of your head. And the reason you have to get it out of your head is that you need to be able to see it on a surface that is not in your mind. And once you can see it, and once you can step back from it, then you can also decide this passes my filter, my constraints, so maybe I can show it and share it with some other people. And then they will be like that's the stupidest idea ever and or that's somewhat interesting, but maybe this and this and this. So the sooner you can do that, then you have a lot of momentum around it, and you can really decide if you want to commit to it and work on it more or put it on the shelf for a later date. And the realization that I think everyone needs to have about that latter option, putting it on the shelf, is that you can come back to it and it will surface back up in another piece of work or another idea at some point in your life. So having that ability to close off a chapter and move on is really, really important. You can't have all these open threads, and that's what I realized I was doing. And that also encouraged me to really write more and to really think about what's the story? How are people coming to this? And like when I show my friends this, how are they going to react and I would write it down. I would actually treat it like a play. And when I realized that I was writing plays, I read a lot more plays for style and for substance and for technique and I think it's really good. I think there is another company that I have always looked towards for inspiration and I know a number of people in this room probably have a similar company in mind, which is Apple. Apple, I think, is run like a theater company. It has a great sense of pacing, has a great sense of story and has a great sense of execution and it's all about event-driven, it's all stage-driven, the stage being a billboard or the stage being a keynote or the stage being a product launch. All of it has a very, very cohesive end-to-end story. I mean you think about what happened when Steve Jobs came back to the company. The first thing he did was kill every product line the company was working on. And for two years,rs they had no product on the market whatsoever. All they had were a bunch of posters all around the world with Steve Jobs' heroes, and it said, think different. And it was just focused on bringing up the brand and making people aware of the brand again and how the brand is aligning to this particular feeling and story. And then they came out with the iMac and then built iTunes and then the iPod, and they realized that, wait a minute, people are carrying music on their phones now, so we better build a phone, an iPhone. And so this unfolding of the plot and the epic story has been very, very interesting to watch, especially if you look back to that time when he came back to the company. So I've learned a lot from that company and other companies that operate in a similar fashion."

A mental model everyone should know: The Regret Minimization Framework. This is how Jeff Bezos used this model to decide to start Amazon: I went to my boss and told him, "I'm going to go do this crazy thing — I'm going to start this company selling books online." This is something I had already been talking to him about in a more general context, and he said, "Let's go on a walk." So we went on a 2-hour walk in Central Park in New York City. The conclusion of that was, he said, "This actually sounds like a really good idea to me, but it sounds like it would be a better idea for somebody who didn't already have a good job!" He convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. So I went away and was trying to find the right framework to make that kind of big decision. I had already talked to my wife about this, and she was 100 percent supportive, saying, "You can count me in – whatever you want to do." It's true, she had married this guy with a stable career and path, but she was 100 percent supportive. So it was really a decision I had to make for myself. The framework I found, which made the decision incredibly easy, was what I called — only a nerd would call — a regret minimization framework. I wanted to project myself forward to age 80 and say, "I'm looking back on my life, I want to have minimized the number of regrets I have." I knew that when I was 80, I was not going to regret having tried this. I was not going to regret participating in this thing called the Internet that I thought was going to be a really big deal. I knew that if I failed, I wouldn't regret that. But I knew the one thing I might regret is not having ever tried. And I knew that would haunt me every day. When I thought about it that way, it was an incredibly easy decision. If you can project yourself to age 80 and think, "What will I think at that time?" it gets you away from some of the daily pieces of confusion. I left this Wall Street firm in the middle of the year, and when you do that, you walk away from your annual bonus. I threw it at the chalkboard, it splattered, and this kid rats me out. But prior to that, my father said, "If you get suspended again, I'm gonna kill you. I'm gonna beat you like you've never been beaten before because you're irresponsible, you're a medium-level juvenile delinquent, and moving at this pace, you're gonna be nothing in life. I'm not having that in my house." So, I wait for the kid I mean, first I go to the office. Three days. Graham Bensinger: You were suspended for three days? Shaquille O'Neal: Suspended for three days. So now I gotta go home, and I already know what I'm getting when I get home. But before I go home, I'm gonna whoop your ass. So I'm beating this kid up, and I'm kicking this kid, and he has an epileptic seizure. It was just me and the kid out there, and he's on the ground shaking, and now I'm frightened because... uh oh. So then a guy comes and he saves the kid. That's a risky thing because you'll find a way to express that by investing and make some compromises on the team because you know this idea is just so good, its time has come. But if the team isn't there, 90% of the time it doesn't work. Then there's a whole thing can you swap out the team? But the whole Founders Fund thesis was always no, you need the founder to run the company. But on the company side, you have to be in love with the idea. It's not that rational to start a company. There's a lot easier, more comfortable ways to make money if that's the goal. So it's got to be about what the company is doing specifically. I love Elon Musk's old interviews. I really enjoy hearing what he said back then, knowing what the future holds. This "CBS Sunday Morning" interview was recorded in 1998, when then 27-year-old Elon talked about starting his first company: “That was the summer of '95. I had no money whatsoever. I was working, doing research in Silicon Valley on a completely different subject and trying to start this company at the same time. And when it came time to decide do I want to do graduate studies or do I want to start this company and I decided to start the company. I had no money. As a graduate student, I would have received a scholarship and a stipend and so forth. In starting the company, I had nothing. I had no income source. So we found that an office was actually cheaper than an apartment in Silicon Valley. So we got this dinky little office that had a leaky roof. It was just the nastiest place you can imagine. And you lived in it. And I lived in it too and showered at the YMCA. This lasted for about three or four months. And the reason we chose this office, in addition to it being really cheap, was that there was an internet service provider on the floor below.
