Benchpress is the most WORTHLESS movement there is. Im not sure why I keep fucking with it. Just hurt my shoulder AGAIN! Right here on this rep.

It’s not the bars fault we’re getting old 😂

True

Strongly disagree 😎💪🔥

It really is though you dont ever need to bench press anything IRL the only thing that matters is deadlift 😎

haha no man, I love a good deadlift too... but just because your shoulder hurts, doesn't mean bench sucks. It just means you probably need to fix what's hurt. I went to a chiropractor recently and he actually started working on my shoulder joint. Maybe you can do the same thing and see if it helps. Could be out of alignment and not even know it.

I started doing a dedicated shoulder warmup including band internal/external shoulder rotations, band spider crawls B4 any movement that involves my shoulders. Esp presses! It really has helped them get internally strong and I stopped dinging them up.

💯💯💯

too much weight. elbows should be tucked and not flared. you hurt your left shoulder?

Right shoulder

Honestly its a skill issue. Your form is awful

Not arching your back to support . No leg drive your letting the weight sink into you rather than controlling it

I am no fan of bench press. But, you will drastically lower your injury risk if you avoid 1rm lifts. Stay in the 5 to 8rm range and you will build some serious strength over time, and enjoy far fewer bench press-related issues.

My right shoulder is cooked so I exclusively use this type of machine at the gym. You can adjust your hand placement and avoid the pain.

might be worth cutting out bottom drop in and bounce out

Sorry to hear that I think I've talked myself out of trying it again. Had a minor pec tear last time.

People call me a bitch because I stopped benching and squatting but I’ve gained more muscle and never missed a day at the gym due to injury ever since

Consider incline dumbbells, slight angle. You shouldn't get so much shoulder pain. 👍

DAMN!!! I wouldn't call it a worthless exercise, BUT depending on your goals. It might not be the right one to use.

Im just mad 💀

What are your goals?

I only do dumbbells anymore for this reason.

How much more can you bench than row?

I can row at least a hundred more pounds than I can bench

Try a narrower grip next time.

I’m over 40 now and I don’t touch weight I can’t do 10 times. You’re asking for it with any 1 rep max on any lift. Not worth it and it don’t build much muscle. Just my $0.02. Keep it up tho, just lower the lb’s.

maybe do 8-10 reps instead of 1. will do wonders for your shoulders 🤣

I had shoulder injuries until my form was fixed. Your form caused the injury. Not being hateful, just stating the facts

This is my life lately...

😔

You are doing more than you are capable of controlling safely. Simple. Swollow your pride and do less with better control.

Bro, I have a similar issue with bench. Every time I work it back into routine, it eventually gets me into shoulder trouble. For chest I've been concentrating on incline dumbbells with palms facing one another to avoid elbow flare. It's totally pain-free for me. I typically superset the incline dumbbells with push-ups. I get after it and don't have pain issues. That's it for chest for me

You need to get a swiss-bar and bench at a 30-degree incline. I tore my supraspinatus and after experimenting no more shoulder pain.

Shift to db.. Much better for shoulder integrity.

It is actually one of the best overall compound movements. That being said, I have had to sub with other exercises myself often, as it periodically inflames an old injury in my shoulder (I am 52 so everything hurts :) I try everything I see out there - and thought this one was one of the best:

When you re-rack, you get your shoulders out of the depressed position by extended them. When I lowered the pins and quit doing this, my shoulder stopped hurting. Try and keep your shoulders pinched and depressed throughout the whole movement.

TELL ME ABOUT IT!!! Still hurting and trying to find a way to get back putting up with pain. Days later lingering pinches. Body telling me to stop….hard addiction.

That’s exactly why I don’t do it.

been using the smith machine instead. risk reward not optimal - specially as we get older! wishing you speedy recovery

Lifting weight too heavy for you, what you expect?

Agreed. I switched to dumbbells only and keep my palms facing each other. Saved my shoulders

I enjoy it too - especially now that my boys lift. Last shoulder injury changed my perspective. I just go lighter here nowadays.

You’re not totally wrong. Yes barbell bench press is still a solid upper body movement hitting chest, tris and anterior delts, but it can cause harmful wear and tear on the shoulders. You can build and stress the pecs with incline dumbbells and machines but the ego calls us out

Due to repeated injuries over the years, I stay in the rep range of 6-10. I ain’t jacking around in the low rep ranges anymore. Stronger at higher reps is still “stronger.”

💪🏾💪🏾

Try dumbbell floor press. Your shoulders won’t go into extension. Also consider cable chest press, which is easy on the shoulders.
