Bengaluru ORR Flooding: A Recurring Challenge That Needs Structural Solutions Yesterday's (June 2) heavy rainfall once again flooded key stretches of Bengaluru’s ORR, including Panathur, Balagere and Varthur, resulting in severe congestion and hours-long commutes for thousands of employees and residents. While the immediate trigger was an intense pre-monsoon... downpour, the root causes remain unchanged: - Blocked and poorly maintained shoulder drains - Stormwater drains clogged with plastic, silt, sand and construction debris - Encroachment of drains and rajakaluves, reducing carrying capacity - Bottlenecks at critical lake interconnections and culverts - Ongoing infrastructure and metro construction impacting road and drainage networks Amidst the disruption, it was encouraging to see citizens, volunteers, traffic police, and local communities come together to assist stranded commuters, help manage traffic movement, and clear blockages wherever possible. Their swift response and collective effort helped ease the situation. Expressed our opposition to the project, as it is not a sustainable solution and would not effectively address Bengaluru’s traffic congestion. An 18 km car-centric road is an impractical and unfeasible idea that would only worsen congestion and harm the environment. Urged a shift in focus towards Mass Rapid Transit Systems to truly decongest Bengaluru. Suggested a comprehensive vision with: - A 300 km Metro Rail network (3-min frequency) - ⁠314 km of Suburban Rail - ⁠Modern trams for short-distance commutes This rail-based backbone can help shift over 70% of commuters from roads to rail. Also proposed adding 5,000 BMTC buses, introducing BRTS on ORR, strengthening BMLTA with a full-time Chairman, and launching a mission-mode program to repair and standardize roads and footpaths for a walkable Bengaluru. Recommended a Special War Room to ensure timely Metro completion. Will continue to oppose the impractical, car-only Tunnel Road. A bipartisan approach is essential to solving Bengaluru’s mobility challenges in the city’s long-term interest.

Brand Bengaluru: Where Dreams Drive, But Boats Float Faster Massive traffic chaos has erupted on the Electronic City flyover and the adjoining main roads, all thanks to the now ritualistic waterlogging near Silk Board. With Hosur Road completely closed due to flooding, the city's infrastructure has once again collapsed like a house of cards at the first sign of rain. Commuters, helpless and frustrated, have started walking on the flyover because clearly, walking through chaos is faster than waiting in it. This isn’t just traffic this is Bengaluru’s monsoon edition of survival of the fittest. Welcome to Brand Bengaluru, where tech dreams come to die in puddles, and BBMP’s contribution is limited to photo ops and press notes. Bengaluru, the so-called city of dreams for thousands, is crumbling not because of nature but because of years of unchecked greed, corruption, and absolute apathy. Earlier today, I led an extensive inspection tour of critical drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation projects across Lekki, Agungi, Ikota and Ajiran, and what we uncovered demands immediate and decisive action. The persistent flooding in Agungi despite the completion of major drainage infrastructure over two years ago has a clear cause. At Ajiran, we discovered that a land owning family deliberately blocked the outfall channel that was specifically designed to discharge stormwater by gravity into the Lagos Lagoon. I have directed that the outlet be reopened immediately in the overriding public interest. Let me state clearly: no individual or family has the right to obstruct natural watercourses or public drainage infrastructure regardless of their land titles. We are not taking anyone's land. We are simply restoring the channel to allow water to flow freely and protect thousands of residents from avoidable flooding. At Megamond Estate in Ikota, we found that developers had illegally reclaimed part of the Ikota River and commenced construction without obtaining the necessary environmental and drainage approvals. Enforcement and abatement notices had been served previously but were ignored. From tomorrow morning, all illegal structures erected on reclaimed drainage alignments without approval in that estate will be removed. This action sends a clear message that Lagos will not tolerate encroachment on drainage channels or public infrastructure. I also reiterate that any development involving wetlands or water related projects must obtain an Environmental Impact Assessment and Wetland Clearance from the Ministry before any reclamation or construction begins. We do not care whose ox is gored. It is unfair to law abiding residents and unacceptable because it compromises public safety. I urge every Lagosian to remain vigilant. The illegal activities we uncovered today came to our attention through whistleblowers. We investigated, verified, and acted. See something, say something - constructively. We are fully committed to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

Earlier today my team and I returned to the Ajiran and Agungi axis in Eti-Osa to inspect the ongoing removal of contraventions and drainage restoration works, and I can report that our decisive intervention is already yielding visible results. Within 48 to 72 hours of reopening the Ajiran channel to the Lagoon and the Ikota River, we have seen a remarkable improvement in stormwater discharge, bringing real relief to residents of Agungi, Ajiran Village, and neighbouring communities. We are not done yet. This exercise continues until the entire drainage alignment is fully restored and reconnected to the natural water bodies. I also met with community leaders and residents to explain both the immediate and long term measures we are deploying. We are collaborating with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to deliver a sustainable engineering solution for this flood prone corridor, and I have directed the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to commence remedial maintenance on channels requiring urgent intervention. At Orange Island on Freedom Way, I reaffirmed that the government remains resolute against illegal dredging and land reclamation. Reclamation activities there were halted last year because the developers failed to obtain the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment and drainage clearance. That area is a major discharge outlet for Lekki Phase I into the Lagoon and any obstruction would create significant environmental challenges. We also inspected downstream discharge points serving Itedo, Kushenla and Freedom Way and identified additional corrective measures for immediate implementation. I commend the Local Government authorities for improving their operational capacity. Flood management is a shared duty. Every new road must have properly designed collector drains connected to primary canals, and communities must take ownership of completed infrastructure. On enforcement, we continue to arrest and prosecute environmental offenders. We will soon deploy between 140 and 150 additional waste compactors to strengthen LAWMA's fleet and support PSP operators. Before the end of this year, our Material Recovery Facilities and Transfer Loading Stations will begin diverting over 4,000 tonnes of waste daily from landfills as we accelerate the transition from a linear waste system to a circular economy. This is the work of building a flood resilient #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

One cannot help but wonder: What has happened to the public money collected through taxes? Why is the Maheshwar Rao.M, IAS turning a blind eye to such basic infrastructure issues? Year after year, roads are dug up, patched shoddily, and left to deteriorate again. Is this negligence or sheer incompetence? Another day, another flood. Welcome back to Brand Bengaluru where urban planning is optional and accountability is extinct. it's HSR Layout 7th Sector one of the so-called “posh” and “well-planned” areas of Bengaluru that has turned into a full-blown lake. Thanks to the unshakable negligence of the Maheshwar Rao.M, IAS, even the most developed neighborhoods are now sinking under their own real estate hype. The drainage system? Completely choked. BBMP? Fast asleep, as if nothing is wrong. It’s almost as if the administration is in a parallel universe where Bengaluru is functioning just fine. Meanwhile, on ground zero, roads have vanished under murky water, vehicles are submerged, and entire stretches look like disaster zones. Severe waterlogging in HSR Layout has brought life to a standstill. Residents are struggling to leave their homes. Office-goers are stranded. Kids can’t go to school. And on top of it all, there's the rising threat of waterborne diseases a gift that comes free with Tushar Giri Nath, IAS version of "rain-ready" infrastructure. The irony? This is the same city that flaunts its “global tech hub” tag. The same city being sold to the world as a destination for innovation and growth. But beneath the glossy billboards and fancy branding, Bengaluru is drowning literally and metaphorically. Every monsoon is a cruel reminder of how fragile this city is.
