"We do adoption events every month. Yesterday was our biggest one. Forty-two dogs found homes. It was a wonderful day. Winston did not find a home. He is eleven years old. He is large. He is silver-gray and his whole muzzle is white and his eyes are the color of a winter morning and he is the gentlest dog I have ever put on a leash. He sat in the same spot for six hours. He did not pace. He did not bark. He watched every dog around him get chosen and he wagged his tail for every family that walked past him without stopping. Every single one. For six hours. At 5pm when the last family had left and the last car had pulled out of the parking lot I turned around and Winston was sitting at the edge of the empty lot wagging his tail at the space where the people had been. I sat down on the asphalt beside him. I put my hand on his silver back. He leaned into me. I don't have a word for what I felt. I have worked in rescue for nine years. I have never sat on a parking lot asphalt at the end of a failed adoption event and felt so completely undone and so completely certain simultaneously. Undone because he deserves everything. Certain because he is going to be okay. Both at the same time. Both because of him. He wagged at the empty parking lot. That is who Winston is. That is who he has been every day of his eleven years. A grizzly bear family was spotted casually walking down a road in Alberta like they owned every inch of it - and after that video circulating of the woman and her dog coming face to face with a grizzly, maybe this explains everything. Maybe they were out looking for him because he wandered too far from the family 😂 One thing is for sure, that woman with the dog is thanking God this whole crew was not there for that encounter because one grizzly was already more than enough to handle. Sophie started spending some afternoons at the shelter because bringing a dog home was never going to be an option. Yesterday it was father's day, and I would like to share this post, that I find very moving: "Father’s Day in Ukraine is a day of pain and pride. It’s a holiday that should be about hugs, children’s laughter, and joyful family photos. But for thousands of Ukrainian families, it’s a day when a lump sits in the throat and eyes are full of tears. Those we call “Dad” are not at home today. Some are in captivity. Some are listed as missing. Some remained forever on the battlefield, having given their lives for their children and our land. And some still hold the line… There are also those who cannot say that word. Children stolen by Russia from Ukraine, their childhoods broken, stripped of ties with their loved ones. Children who are not allowed to remember their parents. It’s a day when every corner of the country carries a different pain, a different devastation. But also immense strength. Because Ukrainian fatherhood is about sacrifice, protection, and resilience. So today, we don’t just celebrate—we honor. Every father who was, is, and will be in the truest sense of the word.
