Bertrand Russell’s timeless message to future generations

"Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons." - Bertrand Russell

I disagree with BR on much, but not on his moral message. As for "only ask what are the facts" , who decides what is fact? There is so much we do not know , and I believe we must always leave room for both uncertainity, and belief in things we cannot see or touch.

If you didn’t / can’t watch it he said to 1. read lots of books 2. smoke a lot of cannabis

Tolerance is not a virtue.

There is a line in the sand for tolerance of evil and so delusion and worse the systamization of it in a glass half empty manner that stifles growth before progressing all

@ylecun We have reached levels of tolerance so grand that Russell himself would spin in his grave

@ljupc0

utterly stupid. Specially at this times. We are too tolerant, that much that we are already ignorant! And facts mean nothing, a fact matters only within a system, made of other facts. Every fact can be dismantled! Most of all you have to believe, in something, then you need to be strong to accept when you are wrong! That’s where we are, we are weak!!

@prometheusgreen Of course he’s right

The two pieces of advice are contradictory. The latter is presented as a fact, but there is no evidence to substantiate it and I see no reason to accept it as such.

I don't value the words of an atheist. It's that simple for me.

he got 1 out of 2. 50%. meh.

@GlenGilmore Excellent advice

The only sense in which Russell's message on 'philosophical' facts is timeless is, it should have no time. It should have been edited out of this recording. There is only one so called 'philosophical' fact. It is, there's no answer to "why am I?", the question of meaning our 'mother' asked that gave birth to humanity. So if we flush all the made up shit that tries to fill this void, love would replace the hate all this shit causes. an excerpt of rhymed reason: Our ‘Mother’ wondered "Why am I?", And gave birth to humanity. Our ‘Father’ looked but couldn't find The reason we were meant to be. Instinctively they’d feared unknowns, So this they felt they should avoid. They tried to fill the emptiness, The first reaction to the void. Till then life had been natural, And after it was mostly so, Until their offspring asked again, Then tries to fill the void would grow. Each growth of this unnatural Activity forced them to find More space for it in life and so By need the natural declined. The natural declined until There is so little left today That soon there’ll be no life to save Unless we grow the other way. Among our tries to fill the void There's money and the life it buys. Religious/philosophical Beliefs are also in our tries. 130 million books Gives academia a try. We research endlessly but still We fail to answer “why am I?” With science and technology We’ve tried non-stop without success To fill the void. Instead we’ve made A gross environmental mess. We try with drugs, sex, games, fast food And alcohol to numb our brains, Then mix in social media, With hope none of the void remains. We try with love and family, Jobs, power and preeminence. Directed inward, tries oppose Thus end in deadly violence Which will increase along with our Accumulating pile of shit, For when we try to fill the void We’ll never see the end of it.👇more

Isn't he the chap who also said that the useless eaters should be killed.

@JMPSimor Simplicity factual and love! Look at Nature and what it has to teach us! Natures biodiversity is totally dependent on each other’s interdependence on every level without favour. We are a part of nature and moving apart from it at great consequence to ourselves and Nature!

@ylecun So true

@jpmignard Christine Lagarde ?

To that, I say ... !!!

Lovely thinker, superb logician, couldn't keep his trousers on.

That's really the only "mistake" Dr. Fauci made during the pandemic. He presented as facts things that he felt would do the most overall good. It was, from his point of view, a very white lie. But it had the effect of making millions of people stop trusting him.

@grok

Why did you wait this long to tell us?

Filthy Fabian.

intelligent answer, but inaccurate. love as a notion is not moral, but metaphysical.

How do you call the English he speaks?

A man with no guile
💯 look at the facts.

Nice words and sentiment. But in fact not possible to attain. Some people's values and way of life are totally not able to be put up with other people's

@philosophybites Paradoxically, ‘looking at the facts’ (“… only and solely at what are the facts”), is not a fact explicable by those facts alone.

The fact: it looks like we are at the center of the universe. What we wish to believe: that we are not special
