Belief comes before confidence & as I tell my sons & the players I coached, production matters. Common denominator for truly great players is an unwavering ability to work hard & a belief in their skills, building the foundation for production. Without work, you can't produce.

IMHO missing a 4th category... those delusional about some of their talents / think they 'arrived' and don't work very hard, BUT can & do produce in competitive situations. We all don't wish for those but they exist. To get their buy-in > that's coaching.

100%! I come from an organization that centered around "work ethic". A strong work ethic allows athletes to develop their skill that grows confidence in its execution. Then you watch them on the field/court, exercising their skill with confidence, it's a wonderful thing to see!
