It must be acutely embarrassing for Google and DeepMind’s top management that, despite having: 1) a multi-year head start, with most of the top minds in the field working there; 2) their own custom training and inference silicon now on its EIGHTH generation; 3) total investment in property, plant, and equipment of $281 billion; 4) over 80k engineers; 5) most of the world’s data collected and indexed for 20 years (including ungodly amounts of documents, emails, code, books, photos, videos, etc.); they have been utterly upstaged by Kimi, a company with fewer than 500 employees and founded by Zhilin Yang, who only received his PhD from CMU in 2019 (recall that Hinton had been working at Google since 2013!). Something is deeply dysfunctional and broken there to lead to an outcome this bad.

California Congressman Ted Lieu is facing widespread calls for his expulsion from Congress after reports revealed that last night’s attempted assassin — a man from Lieu’s home district in California — appears to have acted on the very falsehoods Lieu has repeatedly spread about President Trump. Do you guys remember this guy from last year who stole the.girllens.’s borrowed camera? He was ordered on the InDrive app to deliver a camera to someone, but he ran away with it instead. After seeing posts online of people searching for him, he kept moving from place to place to avoid being caught. He was eventually caught on February 12 this year, but by then he had already sold everything in the bag for 200k and couldn’t trace the buyers, claiming they were Ikeja boys by the roadside. Part of the reason IT people are being laid off is that many of their abilities can be replaced by AI. In the past, the joke was that you would just google it, but that still required some IT knowledge. Now, you can ask AI how to fix an issue and it will walk you through how to fix most things. (if you have admin permissions to your computer) To be fair, no one knows all the weird nuances and issues that can arise with software so google has always been used to find IT fixes - but it took more research and knowing how to implement the fix before.

Tamale Mirundi was the kind of man you would dislike, and at the same time look forward to listening to. He had many contradictions, swinging from one position to another and back. But wherever he stood at a time, he had that gift of the gab to make you feel like he had some point. He laboured to analyse. Much of his analysis was sophistic, and often opportunistic. But you had to be keen to notice the fallacies therein, otherwise you would get carried away by the entertainment in his way with words, metaphors, and fitting examples that were always available to him. Much as his books (pamphlets) were dismissed by many in view of the speed at which they were released, they manifest a desire to reflect and document. He prided in his arrogance. But it was usually an entertaining arrogance, easy to let pass. Towards the end of his life, his vocabulary became more and more unhinged, requiring Parental Guidance. Could the liberty of his tongue have been Dutch courage? As a propagandist, sometimes he sounded far fetched in his conspiracy theories, but his quality was often a bit higher than the new herd of bonehead propagandists deployed by his political club on social media. Many of them are characteristically unimaginative, belly-brained, predictable, petty, and, in summary, stupid. You can detect them from their first sentence. One of the features of philosophical minds is the freedom to think beyond conventions, venturing into taboo topics, pushing boundaries of what is acceptable, and questioning common sense. Much of this he did. He questioned religious beliefs and cultural norms. He lived the way of his mind. In many ways, including when he went off limits of social decency and civility, he was his own man. He dared to use his brain. He hasn’t returned it to the creator intact. May he find rest.

Battletrap had one of the coolest designs in Transformers ROTB. He was a character that looked very badass, our modeling team did an amazing job on him. Originally, he was a Decepticon, even having the Decepticon insignia on his forehead and in concept art. We changed this to the Terrorcon insignia fairly late into production to match the rest of the Terrorcons like Scourge and NightBird. He was a very large character and we spent a good chunk of time making him dirty and greasing him up. I did the blocking Texturing & LookDev on him before handing off to my team to take him through to final. We experimented with making the lights of his eyes pulse and animate as he spoke, since he doesn't have a mouth, but these efforts were scrapped as he didn't have enough dialogue in the film to warrant the R&D efforts required to make it look great. Fun fact: During production, a Transformers fan had found my University graduation project of Titan (the predecessor to Hyperion) and claimed it was a leak of Battletrap from the film. This was very funny to see from my perspective as someone who had made the referenced work and was also working on the film itself.
