Beyoncé’s 2016 CFDA Fashion Icon Award speech reflected on how fashion shaped her life long before she was born, beginning with her seamstress grandmother, Agnèz Deréon-Beyincé, through her stylist mother, Tina Knowles, and her designer cousin, John Rittenhouse Jr. She recalled how high-end labels refused to dress “four Black country-curvy girls” when Destiny’s Child were starting out and couldn’t afford designer pieces, so Ms. Tina and Uncle Johnny created every outfit, sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls by hand. In 2023, Beyoncé co-created her own couture collection with Olivier Rousteing for the house of Balmain, becoming the first Black woman to oversee a couture offering from a historic Parisian maison. In 2025, she won her first Emmy Award for Costume Design for “Beyoncé Bowl.” A decade later, in 2026, Beyoncé will attend the MET Gala as a co-chair.

Ms. Tina reveals how ITV’s ‘A Night with Beyoncé’ was one of the hardest shows for Beyoncé and her team (via Instagram) “This just came across my feed! It took me down memory lane. This is one of the hardest shows we’ve ever done. Beyoncé was about two months pregnant and as nauseated as she could be. In between songs, she would run back and throw up and come out and do the next song. This is when I knew without a doubt how strong and resilient of a performer she was…we couldn’t tell anyone about the pregnancy. Only TY HUNTER, me and Tim White knew. As sick as she was, she got through the show and killed her performances ❤️❤️ All the band and crew knew was she was sick.”
