Single-cell biology has given us an incredible window into cell-to-cell variability, and some of that variability is important. Much of it is technical noise masquerading as biology. Good science tells the difference. Excellent science finds the simple structure underneath.

Single-cell analysis gets powerful beyond cataloging differences. It can reveal coherence: Coordinated programs, protein covariation, stoichiometric relationships that hold across cells and conditions. Finding regularity amid the noise is the harder, more valuable result.
