defacing US currency is illegal under the U.S. Criminal Code. Section 333 of the code states that anyone who defaces, cuts, or mutilates a bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by a national banking association, Federal Reserve bank, or the Federal Reserve System with the intent to make it unfit for reissue can be fined or imprisoned for up to six months.
