But every now and then, I get a follower who still believes what they see on TV news media, especially when it comes to Bidan. I am amazed that Gavin Newsom keeps returning to this “he put on a mask and his face grew into it” metaphor. He first used it in this 2023 interview to describe how he ended up in a leadership position. He almost certainly encountered it through his wife’s documentary, which opens with it, but it originates from George Orwell’s essay “Shooting an Elephant.” Orwell intended the metaphor to serve as a warning against tyrannical authority. By donning the mask, the narrator, a colonial government official, transforms into “an absurd puppet” who wields power while abandoning his own moral judgment. If he continues, he risks having his face fuse into the mask, making it impossible to remove and erasing any remnant of the authentic self. It’s a cautionary tale against the dehumanizing effects of unchecked power. In typical sociopathic fashion, he projects his own traits onto his opponents.
