They were mocked, ostracised, and in some cases cut off by friends and family. Society, for a time, treated them as a threat simply for exercising bodily autonomy. The psychological toll of that experience has been almost entirely erased from public conversation. The isolation, the financial stress, the sense of being cast out, these are genuine wounds that have never been properly acknowledged, let alone addressed. And there is a darker irony here. Those who took the vaccine and suffered adverse effects have a clear, if difficult, legal path: they can pursue claims against pharmaceutical companies or seek compensation through government schemes. The process is flawed and often inadequate, but a target exists. The unvaccinated have no such avenue. They were not harmed by a product, they were harmed by society. By policies, by mandates, by the collective pressure of institutions, employers, and media. You cannot sue a social atmosphere. You cannot bring a claim against the culture of contempt that was directed at them. There is no defendant to name, no court prepared to hear it. A thought from an oncologist: The biggest mistake people make is believing that healthcare’s problems can be explained by a single villain. Reality is more uncomfortable. Pharmaceutical companies have developed some of the most life-saving innovations in human history. At the same time, corporations are not charities. They are businesses. And businesses respond to incentives. When legal, financial, and regulatory incentives become misaligned, behavior that may be technically legal can still raise important ethical questions. What concerns me most is not any one company. It is the broader principle: Trust is one of medicine’s most important drugs. Patients trust that products are safe. They trust that risks are disclosed. They trust that if harm occurs, accountability exists. Once that trust erodes, everyone loses. Patients lose confidence. Physicians lose credibility. And genuine scientific advances become harder for the public to accept. The lesson is this: The goal should not be to be anti-pharma or pro-pharma. It should be to be pro-patient. Celebrate innovation. Demand transparency. Reward breakthroughs. Insist on accountability. All at the same time. As oncologists, we have witnessed pharmaceutical companies produce therapies that have transformed diseases once considered hopeless. We have also learned that scrutiny, independent research, and robust legal oversight are essential. Science works best when no institution is above questioning. And patients are best served when no institution is above accountability. The strongest healthcare system is not one where corporations always win or always lose. It is one where the patient’s interests remain the highest priority.
