The 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) is taking place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, bringing together over 155 countries and regions, along with 4,108 overseas exhibitors. This year, the Expo has set up a dedicated section for products from least developed countries (LDCs), featuring specialties from more than 30 nations — including coffee, fruits, handicrafts, and daily chemical products. A total of 123 Belt and Road participating countries and 163 enterprises from LDCs are represented, marking year-on-year increases of 23.1% and 23.5%, respectively. These initiatives help enterprises from 53 African countries make full use of zero-tariff treatment and gain better access to the Chinese market, expanding the Expo’s role from a trade fair into a gateway for shared development opportunities across the Global South. When the first CIIE opened in 2018, China’s total goods imports reached US$2.14 trillion. By 2024, this figure had risen to US$2.58 trillion, reflecting China’s unwavering commitment to high-level market opening and its role as a stable platform for global enterprises amid economic uncertainty. Notably, the CIIE has evolved into a key platform for global cooperation and innovation. The concurrent Hongqiao International Economic Forum hosts sub-forums on topics such as WTO reform, international AI standards, and supply chain resilience, contributing to global economic governance. Over the past seven years, more than 3,000 new products, technologies, and services have made their debut at the Expo — including 461 innovations launched this year alone. In terms of policy support, China’s overall import tariff rate now averages 7.3%, while the World Bank reports a weighted average tariff of below 3%, aligning with global standards and significantly lowering market entry costs for overseas firms. At its core, the CIIE’s sustained success lies in its ability to connect China’s evolving consumer demand with high-quality global supply, continuously injecting new vitality into global trade and cooperation.

I asked Maldives Airports Company Ltd staff to contact Beijing Capital Airlines’ ground handler (Voyages Maldives). The airline staff could not come to assist but spoke over the phone. Their position was clear: They have no SOP to provide immediate assistance or even attend the case proactively from their side, all the burdens are on the passengers they are expected to: • Manage on their own ( note: most of our arrivals are tourists ) • Go home however they can • Buy a new suitcase if necessary • Submit a claim later with receipts and hope for reimbursement Now the serious Q: How is an airline allowed to operate at the main international airport of a top global tourist destination without internationally practiced minimum passenger assistance standards? Legal liability sits with the airline. But service standards inside the terminal fall under airport oversight. If MACL does not require airlines to follow defined passenger assistance standards, that is a regulatory gap that must be addressed. In just 30 days of conflict in the region, the country has moved more cargo than it did in all of last year. 💬 "Those volumes are coming because of the war. But over time, when risk will be heightened in the Gulf region, there will be an opportunity to have it on a sustained manner, and we need to be prepared for it,” Ali Khizar, Director of Research at Business Recorder told Sputnik. 💬 "Pakistan is repositioning itself as it used to be, the [regional logistics] hub in the 1960s. After that, with the rise of the Middle East, Pakistan lost its steam. Now, with the changing global world order, especially the regional world order, Pakistan has the opportunity to emerge.” 🟠 The question is whether Pakistan can seize the opportunity—before it closes. 🟠 Through tariff incentives and institutional reforms, Islamabad is positioning the country’s ports as regional transshipment hubs. UPDATE 🔥🔥: Gateway International Airport gets approval for Scheduled Commercial flights✈️✈️✈️ I can CONFIRM that the Gateway International Airport has been GRANTED Interim Aerodrome Operational Permit to operate Scheduled Commercial flights by the NCAA. {Check slides for videos of the airport) About the Gateway International Airport: —Conceived in 2019 and built from ground up by Governor Dapo Abiodun Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun, CON ✅ —First Approval of its kind in Nigeria. ✅ — Longest Runway in Nigeria and West Africa. ✅ —Strategic facility for both passenger and cargo operations, with a primary focus on agro-cargo. —Conceptualized as an aerotropolis; an integrated development that merges an airport with industrial parks, residential areas, and business districts. —The airport is projected to provide employment opportunities for around 25,000 unemployed youths in the state, according to Nairametrics. —The airport will now serve as the alternate airport to Murtala MUHAMMED International Airport. Before its construction, if any aircraft cannot land at MMIA, the flight is re-directed to Accra Airport. The gateway international airport ends that dilemma. ✅ —It aims to boost Ogun State and Nigeria's economic development by facilitating trade, investment, and job creation. The airport is designed to handle commercial, cargo, and passenger traffic, with the goal of decongesting other major airports like Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
