He is spot on Parents today especially moms hover and never allow their children to be independent they are up their ass all the time….controlling everything in their lives …they’re kids their husbands etc…the state of women these days is insane…let go a little and relax

Accurate. Being a parent has been the greatest joy in my life. But, I was a strict parent. The kids don’t run the household, the parents do. All my kids grew up to be loving, responsible, and hardworking citizens.

Parents turn kids into roommates and then cry they never get a minute alone. You don't negotiate with a child. You run the house. Who told you that job was a group vote?

A millenial mom was complaining about how much she had to do vs her husband and when we got to the bottom of it she was mad that she had to sort and put her kids clothes in bins. I didn’t know people even did that. She created this chore for herself then got mad about it.

Commandment #5 says "Honor thy parents." That means, no negotiation. You listen, you do what you're told, and you shut up.

Remember my daughter saying she couldn’t get her kids to go out to do things with her. They went out with me all the time. The difference was I didn’t ask. I just said “we’re going”, and they got in the car, and off we went. (They lived with me)

I loved being a parent and after my divorce now 20 years later - my 28 year old son that I taught everything to won't talk to me in the last 7 years and when I have seen him - he is a stranger - his mommy did this to him and he complied - I am moving on - at 59 I am alone and I don't think another girlfriend or any relationship will change that. My father used to say in hard stressful moments, 'the battery is dead' which means you can't change a fact once it is a fact - good or bad. Shit happens and you move on.

This is so true. Like with sports so many parents put their kids in multiple sports and have to travel, spend so much money, and burn themselves out going to games and practices. Just say no or limit them to one thing. It doesn't have to be so hard.

He’s 100% right. Why would you waste your energy negotiating with a child when you’re an adult. Kids have friends thier own age. Stop trying to be their friend.

The challenge I see today with parents is how do you teach your children to be adults when the parents themselves are not adults but simply buddies. If you can say NO to your child, you’re on the road to teaching your children how to survive in this world.

Negotiating with your child while you’re raising them is bad parenting 101. I never negotiated anything with my child. She did what I told her to do.

I grew up in 80's/90's. Some days, my mom would lock us out & tell us to go to a friends house. Even young I understood that meant we were not behaving and she needed a moment apart from us. That would be considered child abuse now but then it was self care. It was self care.

Soft parenting became a plague. He nailed it.

What do you want for lunch? Where do you want to go today? Do you want to go to bed? So exhausting for the child!!! You are the parent, you give structure and direction for them and they can relax and be a kid

My dad once left me at home after saying “get ready for church” (multiple times) while I ran down the gravel driveway chasing the minivan trying to to put on the belt to my slacks. 😂

100% Give children two choices, the one you want and a bad choice then tell them to pick one. It works like a charm and the kids love it too.

I remember when my daughter was in 3rd grade (she’s 22 now) and during Easter, a classmates mom was surprised that my daughter had traditional Easter clothes on. She asked me how did I get her to wear it? I was like “Huh?” I buy and she wears it. This was not a controversial thing. It was a pink dress with a white poncho….little girl Easter attire.

It goes back to the simple question, “Who’s in charge”? As the parents, it was us, not the children, not some household committee, but the parents. Motherhood was the best thing (next to marrying my husband) that I did. Were there difficult times? Of course! But the joy of being a mother far far outweighed any difficult moments. Build a solid foundation, and the house stands.

Spot on. And I don't agree w/Maher on much of anything. I raised my kids that way. Other Boston parents ask: Wow, your kids are so well behaved. How do you do it? My answer: They don't have a choice. 😊
