🎙️ Bill Simmons: "Could this Hornets team potentially make 18-19 threes a game? What's the ceiling for that? Is that worth like 10 wins?" "They traded LaMelo and you would think the Charlotte threes would go backwards. They made 16.4 threes a game last year, which led the league.... show more

@BillSimmons Who’s going to facilitate these open looks? The only person on the team who can consistently pressure the rim is Coby white

🎙️ Zach Lowe's hypothetical Steph Curry trade to Charlotte: "The Hornets have all the ingredients, and it would not be Brandon Miller or Kon Knueppel. They're not doing that. It would probably have to involve one of Naz Reid or Coby White, neither of whom are tradable yet under NBA rules, another salary, and then a bunch of picks." 🤨 (📹

🎙️ Bill Simmons goes over his NBA Lottery Karma Rankings: "Charlotte, who's in the 14th spot, 2.4% chance to move up, but Kon (Knueppel) was the 3rd pick, (Brandon) Miller 2nd, and LaMelo (Ball) 3rd. They don't really need another top 4 pick." "They really put together a smartly constructed roster... they went 3-for-3. You could argue (Tyrese) Haliburton for LaMelo, but nobody would've taken Haliburton 3rd in that draft... so they get a little karma for how well they've run the team the last couple years."

Kon Knueppel is Bill Simmons's pick for ROTY. "It comes down to being on a good team and all this stuff he had to do versus (Cooper) Flagg being on a crappy team that just gave him the car keys and said, 'Make all the mistakes you want.'" "If I'm a rookie, I would rather be in that situation than the situation Kon was in, where he was basically playing a playoff game every game from January on because they had dug such a hole for themselves early that they were trying to climb into the playoff picture. I think if Kon was on a bad team, he could have scored more than he did." "...am I just voting for who jumps out as they're gonna be awesome 10 years from now? Or is it, am I just evaluating the year? Because if I am evaluating the year... Kon had an incredible season. He led the league in threes. He rebounded and played defense. I felt like his gravity and all the movement he has were the key to how their offense really worked. He played the whole year... and his team turned out to be one of the 10 best teams of the last four months of the season. And to me, that just matters where I'm always gonna gravitate toward the winning." (📹

🎙️ Esfandiar Baraheni says the Charlotte Hornets would be a "fascinating" destination for Giannis Antetokounmpo, given their rise in the East and strong fit with the two-time MVP. "If I were Giannis, that would be the team I would want to go play for... can you think about him, LaMelo Ball, Kon Knueppel, and Brandon Miller? I know you would have to maybe trade one of those guys, but the level of shooting next to Giannis would be exceptional. They would be one of the best offenses, probably one of the most unstoppable offenses, in the league... Charlotte would be really intriguing." (Kevin O'Connor 📹

Paul Pierce says he would move the NBA 3-point and free throw lines back and raise the rim because athletes are too good now “What's bothering me now about the NBA, is the amount of threes. I saw the Celtics shoot 60 threes in a game. Like damn, they could just take it to the bucket. I would implement threes can only be shot at a certain point of the game. Make the three LED. Turn that shit off and then turn it on. You ain't going to know when it's off. But it's always on the last 5 minutes of the game for you to try to come back” “You almost can raise the basket another inch or two. The athletes are so good. Adjust to the athlete, adjust to the skill. Move the three point line back. They can shoot way better now. Move the free throw back like the NFL moved the field goal back. Now these ain't gimmies no more. You really got to make a free throw. Move the shit back. Make the court larger. These athletes are amazing athletes. That's the that just stands out to me”

🎙️ Doc Rivers on the Charlotte Hornets: "They are good. They're here... they're here right now." "Kon (Knueppel) changed their culture. There are certain players that have the ability, Kevin Garnett, to walk in and change the culture without words, but with his actions. Kon has done that, and now LaMelo (Ball) and all the other guys are doing it as well. They've bought into that." "You could make a case, early in the year, Charlotte was probably thinking about moving guys, moving LaMelo, moving (Miles) Bridges, and now you watch them, they're playing like winners. (Brandon) Miller should be up for Most Improved Player... but all that comes from winning and playing the right way." "The sneakiest move that Charles (Lee) made was putting (Moussa) Diabate in the starting lineup. He was a glue guy defensively, and he is as good as anybody in the league offensive rebounding. He's a terror on the glass. I know LaMelo played great, Bridges, but he won that game against Miami. He kept giving them extra shots, and that's invaluable." (Bill Simmons Podcast 📹

🎙️ Bill Simmons: "LaMelo Ball is a real winner this season." "He's actually had seasons with better 'stats.' This is a classic eye test; you have to watch it. I love the way he's playing... there's real thoughtfulness in how he's playing the point guard position now and how he's not as risky and reckless as he was. He doesn't seem like he's in an AND1 tournament anymore." "There's a wherewithal with what he's doing now and how he understands, they have these two incredible wings... Kon Knueppel has a chance to get 300 made threes, which would be nuts. Brandon Miller, when you watch him, this is like the best version of Paul George in the 2010s. And LaMelo's really good at using them, at using Moussa Diabate... he just knows how to drive the (Hornets) car." 🎙️ Zach Lowe: "Everybody got so disgusted with the 5-6 crazy things he would do every game that they unjustifiably dismissed all the statistical indicators that he was actually good and actually was driving Charlotte's offense at a high level when he was on the floor." Klay Thompson says he could have made 20 threes that night and he stopped at 14, while Steph still badly wants to beat it Draymond: “How bad do you think Steph wants to beat your 14 [threes]?” Klay: “Probably badly. I mean, Steph’s such a good sport. You know, I could have ran that thing up to like 16, 17 threes… but maybe 18. You know, I could have even [made] 20. Imagine making 20 threes in a game, that’d be insane. Crazy.” “I know he wants to beat it bad. But he’s number two. Him and Zach are number two. They can stay there.” “Hopefully that record will be broken, records are meant to be broken, so I’ll enjoy it while I got it. But I just hope they put an asterisk next to it. Like, did it in 27 minutes.”

Their offensive rating is 139.4 per 100 possessions, their defensive rating is 107. They are a net +32. In 163 minutes, it's like the greatest team ever. 🎙️ Sam Vecenie: "Charlotte is another team with 16 guaranteed contracts... I would imagine that this roster isn't done yet. I would bet there's some sort of deal that Jeff Peterson comes up with at some point just to even out the roster." 🤔 "Can you move a Royce O'Neale for a couple of second-round picks? Or Grayson Allen, does he get moved if you feel like Liam McNeeley might be able to step into that floor-spacer/shooter role? Or maybe it's Tre Mann because you just drafted Christian Anderson? This feels like an incomplete offseason to me right now, even after the LaMelo (Ball) trade and all the deals they've made." (Game Theory Podcast 📹

Ray Allen says modern basketball has lost one of its greatest skills, and he thinks analytics are to blame. Brice Butler: When you watch today's game, do you see it as evolution, or do you think basketball has lost its art? Ray Allen: When I came into the league, basketball was beautiful. Ray Allen: Teams ran motion offenses, set hard screens, made four or five passes, cut backdoor, it was like watching a machine work. Ray Allen: It was never about one great player. It was about all five guys doing their job. Ray Allen: Sometimes you'd make the hardest cut on the floor knowing you were never getting the ball, just so someone else could score. Ray Allen: That's basketball. Ray Allen: Now? Teams shoot threes, then more threes, then even more threes. Ray Allen: We've lost the mid-range game. Ray Allen: We've lost post-up players. Big men barely have a place anymore. Ray Allen: And to me, that's the tragedy. Ray Allen: You have analytics guys who've never played the game telling organizations they should only shoot threes and layups. Ray Allen: But here's the proof they're wrong... Ray Allen: Look at Oklahoma City and Indiana. Ray Allen: Yes, they had great three-point shooters... but they also dominated in the pick-and-roll and the mid-range. Ray Allen: When I came into the NBA, some of the greatest players lived in that area of the floor. Ray Allen: That's an art, and I think we've lost it.

Jeff Teague says the Timberwolves traded him because he kept taking mid-range jumpers instead of threes. "Literally, they use analytics for everything. I told y'all the reason I got traded because I shot a mid-range jumper." "We were down, going into half, shot clock was going off, and I shot a mid-range jump shot and I actually made it. Going to the locker room, you can hear people yelling. 'If he just don't want to fucking buy in, I'mma get his ass out of here.'" “The coach told me, ‘Jeff, you just have to buy in.’ I said, ‘Buy into what?’ He told me, ‘Stop shooting floaters and mid-range shots. Step behind the line and shoot threes.’” “I wasn’t a volume three-point shooter. I came into the league at a different time and hadn’t made that transition yet. If I would’ve shot 10 threes a game in Minnesota, they would’ve been happy.” “That just wasn't me at that time. They was just like, 'Yeah, we gotta get you the fuck out of here. Like, you're not part of where we want to go.” “After they traded me, every time Minnesota lost, I just went out and had a great time.”

Jeff Teague says Brandon Miller can be at top three shooting guard in the league next year with LaMelo Ball being traded: “Him and Kon Knueppel they about to be the featured players…. 🎙️ Kirk Goldsberry: "The Charlotte Hornets have the best offense in the NBA over the last 15 games." "They are surging on offense. To your point, we've always known that LaMelo Ball had more talent in his little finger offensively than just about any other player in this league." I talked to one of their assistant coaches a couple weeks ago, and they were just raving about how smart those guys are together and how they feel like they have a real strong offensive identity now." That's an identity." "We talk about the vacuum in the Eastern Conference. Well, I think Charlotte's onto something here.
