While elections are underway, the machinery of all political parties will be involved in the election process and the campaign. No political party will have time to monitor the SIR process... The Zila Panchayat elections could have been held three weeks later. The SIR process could have begun three weeks later. But what urgency has arisen that the SIR process and the Zila Panchayat elections are being conducted so hastily in Goa, at the same time, with exactly the same election machinery? ... The Election Commission has established a very detailed process to determine if someone's name appears incorrectly in the draft electoral roll, and if they are wrongly included, they will be sent a notice... S.I.R. is a process to clean the voters' list during election time. The primary duty of the Election Commission of India is to ensure the voting rights of the common people, conduct free and fair elections, and give the people of this country the opportunity to cast their votes. But 27 lakh voters have been deleted from the electoral list. Today, I met Mr. Rajagopal. He was denied a passport because of the S.I.R. process. His daughter's marriage was in the US. At that time, he applied for the renewal of his passport. But the passport was denied on the grounds citing the reason that he was not on the voters' list. He is not a non-person.
