Man Shot by Deputies After Swatting Call Reports Fake Child Shooting Support us by shopping at our Amazon Store: Pima County, Arizona — On April 10, 2026, at approximately a.m., Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) deputies responded to a 311 call reporting a shooting at a residence in the 1000 block of East Fenley Drive in the Summit neighborhood. The caller identified as Axeel Melendez, 23, and claimed his father had shot his younger sister. Deputies knocked on the front door twice and announced their presence with no response. They were unable to gain entry through the back door. One deputy used a shovel to break a window into a back room and entered the home. Inside, deputies encountered Melendez armed with a handgun. Deputies Santiago Casillas-Velazquez and Andres Vasquez discharged their firearms. Melendez was struck and sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital for treatment. Three PCSD deputies sustained minor injuries unrelated to gunfire. No other individuals were injured, and there were no deaths. The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT) determined the call was a swatting incident. Melendez was not the caller, and no shooting had occurred inside the home before deputies arrived. The initial report of an injured child was false. The criminal investigation is being conducted by PRCIT. PCSD is reviewing whether deputies followed department policies. The findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review. On June 23, 2026, PRCIT released a video report of the incident. No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting as of the latest available information. Public reports and official statements do not detail any prior criminal history for Axeel Melendez.
