OK, paint me stupid, but why is a smaller population a bad thing? People who survived the Black Death saw a huge improvement in their lives (a general statement). Less workers makes them more valuable. More people makes each one less valuable. And that doesn't even include the AI revolution we are on the threshold of experiencing. People are going to be redundant.
