We have to ask ourselves: Why foreigners can blend in around us so easily, when their foreignness is so obvious? We have to ask ourselves why foreigners can mascaraed as (B)lack so comfortably. Another way to think of it is: Why can our familial cousins move freely among our family, but strangers cannot? It’s because WE have validated their presence through lineage and familiarity. WE are doing the same with melanated peoples from around the world. It’s the “Play Cousin Condition” : Association with someone foreign or outside of one’s group, increases their personal value and public perception.
