📽️🎶 After Robot: Kwaito Music in Johannesburg (2002) Every now and again, I return to this short doccie and each time, I’m struck by just how much the artists of the early 2000s carved out new ways of being. It reminds me of how kwaito musicians forged powerful and diverse cultural identities, even while facing systemic barriers in the music industry and a social climate that wasn’t always receptive to the “new wave.”

Artists will soon have access to 94 affordable homes at 1687 Market Street in San Francisco. Today we broke ground on Artists Hub on Market. In addition to homes for low-income artists, arts workers, arts administrators, entertainment workers, and their families, there will be rehearsal rooms, a black box theatre, and services supporting the arts. Our city is stronger and more vibrant when artists can live in the city where they work. With this groundbreaking, we’re sending a clear message to our arts community: you have a future in San Francisco. Residents will be certified through a new Artist Housing Certification Program run by the Arts Commission, ensuring these homes go to active creative workers. This project is designed to be replicated, so we can build more homes like this across the city, and it is funded thanks to a generous $100 million gift from an anonymous donor and tax-exempt bonds shepherded by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development. Thank you to Artists Hub on Market and Mercy Housing California for making this project possible and supporting our city’s incredible artists.

When Trump said Hispanic migrants are “taking Black jobs,” what he really meant was: Black folks are taking white jobs, and we need to get the plantation back in order. I’m from the Deep South—the 50th-ranked state in the country. A state that’s over a third Black, yet run by conservatives who always find a way to blame Black communities for its failures. So, I’m never shocked by statements like these. But I do wonder—do all the folks who like to play nice and pretend everything is fine still feel that way today? We have a choice in how we move forward with each other. Trump should be letting the investigation play out, but he can’t help himself. He’s on a mission to restore what he and Elon see as the natural order: intelligent white men and women in charge—who, in reality, are just mediocre—backed by a handful of others who pledge their loyalty to whiteness. At this point, I just want us to stop pretending. And to the Black folks who never support Black leaders—is this better? The future we want won’t build itself. It’s on us to fight for—now.

Though relegated to mainly domestic work and cacao farming, many people do not know that Costa Rica 🇨🇷 enslaved Africans for almost 200 years. There was a deliberate push for many years to erase this history which by default erased the history of Black Costa Ricans. After emancipation in 1824, Costa Rica saw a large migration of thousands of Jamaicans and Panamanians who came in to build the Atlantic Railroad. Some took advantage of land grants for Banana farming bringing their vibrant Caribbean culture with them, evident to this day. Unfortunately, after Black people helped Costa Rica build a sustainable economy in the early 1900s, many were denied citizenship and as a result lost the land they had farmed on for decades to whites. After fighting and winning a civil war in 1948, Black Costa Ricans gained citizenship. Today the population is a beautiful blend of Spanish, Carribean/African and Indigenous people. Costa Rica Celebrates African Culture in Limón’s Grand Parade to honor the Black Costa Ricans who helped build the country and make room for their descendents to tell their stories. 🇨🇷❤️🇨🇷 This is culture.

For Black History Month We honor James Brown — not just the Godfather of Soul, but a cultural pioneer whose impact on music, business, and Black excellence helped reshape American history. Born in 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina, James Brown rose from deep poverty to become one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century — creating a sound and stage presence that would lay the foundation for funk, soul, R&B, hip-hop, and modern pop music. But beyond the hits… he was a trailblazer in ways many don’t realize: ✨ One of the first Black artists to own his publishing rights — giving him control over his music and financial future at a time when most Black performers were exploited by the industry. ✨ Among the first Black entertainers to demand fair pay and integrated audiences — refusing to perform for segregated crowds during the Civil Rights era. ✨ First artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in its inaugural 1986 class — cementing his place as a musical architect of modern sound. ✨ One of the first major artists to use his platform for direct community reinvestment — funding scholarships, youth programs, and speaking in schools about education and self-determination. ✨ Performed for U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968, bringing a sense of home to service members deployed in a time of war — a legacy that resonates with so many of us who’ve worn the uniform, including right here in communities like Moreno Valley and March Air Reserve Base. In 1968, James Brown performed for service members at March Air Force Base in Riverside County(where I served and live!) bringing the same energy and sense of home to troops stationed right here in our own community. ✈🏾 In the 1960s, James Brown became one of the first major Black recording artists to own a private jet — a Learjet 23 — during a time when most entertainers were still traveling by bus. For Brown, this wasn’t about luxury. It was about independence. Owning his own aircraft allowed him to control his touring schedule, move his band and crew between cities on his terms, and avoid many of the segregated travel barriers that still existed across the country. From Please, Please, Please to Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud, his music became both a soundtrack and a statement — uplifting identity, confidence, and pride during some of the most turbulent chapters in American history. James Brown didn’t just change music. He changed ownership. He changed performance standards. He changed what it meant for Black artists to lead — on stage and behind the scenes. His final performance may be over… …but the rhythm of his legacy still drives generations forward. 🖤🏾🎤 #BlackHistoryMonth #JamesBrown #MusicHistory #BlackExcellence

The last music video I ever made with a camera. On this shoot I hired a drone operator to fly over a truck. I noticed when I called "action" the drone pilot just hit a button and never touched the controls again. The drone was automatically following the artists face. Can everything be automated? I knew then that my job was going to disappear very quickly. I imagined a future where artists uploaded their song and a selfie and got a full music video back in seconds. I can't compete with that. So I committed to staying up to date on new tech that helped artists become self-sufficient. Ai doesn't undercut artists. Ai liberates artists from financial barriers that are otherwise almost impossible to break through. Get to work.
