Whenever people ask me if I work at a place, I understand they need help. Usually I say, "No, but I shop here all the time. Can I help you find something?" I guess it's a white people thing.

I used to cater for a living. Was always in grocery stores shopping for product. I was asked many times "do you work here, I'm looking for ..." I'd either say "no" or "no, but I know where that is" and tell them. Can't imagine being so fragile about people asking questions!

I would never ask a black even if I knew they worked there because most likely they would be no help and give me attitude anyways.
