This is the kind of creativity that makes me smile every time 🪄 My son was recently building a retaining wall at the lake when he uncovered a set of concrete blocks that had been there for over 100 years. Tucked inside was an old glass bottle from a local bottling company. Before giants like Coke and Pepsi dominated the market, a lot of towns had their own small bottlers making and delivering drinks locally. Finding a piece of that history was pretty cool. That’s why I enjoyed watching Dave pull broken glass bottles out of the harbor, clean them up, cut them down in his workshop, and turn them into beautiful beeswax candle holders. Finally, a database can generate its own embeddings now. When you add semantic search to an app, the standard step is to wire up an external embedding service, sync the vectors to a separate store, and write glue to keep everything updated as data changes. While this is a standard setup, problems show up later when your data changes, but your pipeline has already run, and search quality starts degrading in ways that are hard to pin down because nothing is explicitly broken. MongoDB Atlas handles this with auto-embedding. You point an index at a text field, specify a Voyage AI model, and Atlas generates the vectors inside the database. When a document changes, it re-embeds itself automatically, so that the search always stays grounded to the current context. I tested this against MongoDB's sample movies collection, 21,000 plots indexed with one config. A plain English query about dystopian machine-controlled futures returned semantically relevant results, despite having no keyword overlap. Woman tries to hide a man in her house from police. Does not end well for them. Officers responded to a residential home following a report that a man named Nicholas was actively violating a protection order. Upon arriving, officers physically observed a male matching Nicholas's description walking into the house. However, when officers approached the front door, a woman named Elizabeth immediately stonewalled them. She repeatedly insisted Nicholas wasn't there, claiming he was miles away at another house. Over several minutes, she cycled through conflicting excuses—first claiming a different man named "Jeff" went inside, then claiming someone with warrants was present, and finally asserting no one was in the home at all.
