The scene in Goodfellas where Jimmy tries to get Karen to go into the storefront is a masterclass in suspense and paranoia. You never really know if it was a real trap or just her coke-addled brain playing tricks on her. One of the brilliant things about it is the sound design. Scorsese shot the scene right under the elevated subway line at Smith & 9th in Brooklyn. As Karen walks out onto that empty street, you hear the train rumbling overhead, subtly raising the tension in a way no score could. Scorsese pulls you right into her headspace by alternating between three shots: a close-up of her walking down the street, her point of view searching for the store, and her point of view looking back at Jimmy - immersing you in her experience, capturing her rising fear and growing distrust of Jimmy with every cut.
