This is a wonderful season to be in Baku, as the city is filled with lights and decorations welcoming the new year. As a Christian, today I am celebrating Christmas (Orthodox calendar), together with the 250,000 members of the Christian community here, which enjoys freedom of faith and worship. Two weeks ago I celebrated Hanukkah with the Jewish community, which is the one of the biggest in the Muslim world. They also enjoy full religious freedom, and they feel safer practicing their faith here in Azerbaijan than in most European capitals, especially as antisemitism is on the rise these days. Last week we celebrated the New Year, Novi God, together with all the citizens of Azerbaijan, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Azerbaijan is an example of moderation and tolerance, where Muslims, Christians and Jews can live their faith without fear. Merry Christmas!

A group of women who got tired of the deplorable circumstances of living in IDP camps attempted to go home to get some food. It took the a lot of bravery from volunteers and the military to reach them from behind enemy line.

Across the world, hundreds of leaders, public figures, and celebrities are posting photos in this sweater to say one thing loud and clear: the fate of Ukrainian children is not up for negotiation. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has carried out a systematic campaign to erase Ukrainian identity by abducting children, placing them in Russian families, and brainwashing them into becoming something they are not. It is a war crime — recognized as such by the International Criminal Court, which has issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova. These children have been used as weapons — to weaken Ukraine and threaten the security of Europe. But we will not allow this to be their fate. To everyone joining this campaign: thank you.
