This is a wonderful season to be in Baku, as the city is filled with lights and decorations welcoming the new year. As a Christian, today I am celebrating Christmas (Orthodox calendar), together with the 250,000 members of the Christian community here, which enjoys freedom of faith and worship. Two weeks ago I celebrated Hanukkah with the Jewish community, which is the one of the biggest in the Muslim world. They also enjoy full religious freedom, and they feel safer practicing their faith here in Azerbaijan than in most European capitals, especially as antisemitism is on the rise these days. Last week we celebrated the New Year, Novi God, together with all the citizens of Azerbaijan, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Azerbaijan is an example of moderation and tolerance, where Muslims, Christians and Jews can live their faith without fear. Merry Christmas!

Israeli forces have been deployed to the cities of Tubas and Qabatiya, where they are carrying out operations aimed at arresting Palestinian militants from local armed groups affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas. Earlier, clashes took place in the village of Marka, near the city of Jenin, as well as in Balata Refugee Camp in the city of Nablus, during which two militants were killed by Israeli soldiers. The IDF already effectively occupies the cities of Tulkarm and Jenin following their earlier military operation which began in January 2025, which largely forced Palestinian armed groups across the northern West Bank to scatter to the surrounding towns and villages. They do not occupy the communities immediately, but leave behind their scouts (usually younger and harmless looking herders). These scouts update the Islamist fighters of any activities suspected to be attempts by the Christians to return home. The videos here are from communities in Apa, Benue State in 2024. A group of women who got tired of the deplorable circumstances of living in IDP camps attempted to go home to get some food. It took the a lot of bravery from volunteers and the military to reach them from behind enemy line.

At approximately midday today, a group of Israelis led by a Member of Knesset and accompanied by Israeli media entered without authorisation into UNRWA’s compound in Sheikh Jarrah, #EastJerusalem. The group asserted they were “liberating” the “former UNRWA headquarters” on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, which for Israelis marks the reunification of the city. However, under international law, East Jerusalem is occupied territory and its annexation by the State of Israel is not recognised. The group brought flags and erected banners, seeking to claim the compound for the establishment of a new Israeli neighbourhood. Israeli police, alerted to the scene, failed to protect the inviolability of the United Nations premises. Following months of aggravated harassment directed towards the site and the entry into force of two anti-UNRWA Knesset laws in January 2025, United NationsRWA was forced to vacate the compound and withdraw under protest all its international staff. This unauthorised entry represents another violation of Israel’s obligations as a UN member state to protect United Nations premises and facilitate humanitarian work. UNRWA condemns today's illegal provocation.

At approximately midday today, a group of Israelis led by a Member of Knesset and accompanied by Israeli media entered without authorisation into UNRWA’s compound in Sheikh Jarrah, #EastJerusalem. The group asserted they were “liberating” the “former UNRWA headquarters” on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, which for Israelis marks the reunification of the city. However, under international law, East Jerusalem is occupied territory and its annexation by the State of Israel is not recognised. The group brought flags and erected banners, seeking to claim the compound for the establishment of a new Israeli neighbourhood. Israeli police, alerted to the scene, failed to protect the inviolability of the United Nations premises. Following months of aggravated harassment directed towards the site and the entry into force of two anti-UNRWA Knesset laws in January 2025, United NationsRWA was forced to vacate the compound and withdraw under protest all its international staff. This unauthorised entry represents another violation of Israel’s obligations as a UN member state to protect United Nations premises and facilitate humanitarian work. UNRWA condemns today's illegal provocation.
