We met in Compton at his studio and talked music, family, gangs, and his passion for writing & performing. He was intelligent & gracious. Kendrick's album Good Kid, M.A.D.D City was released months later. The footage in our story was literally Kendrick free-styling on the mic for us. His story is one of my favorites of my entire career. The then 23-year-old was just about to blow up into the megastar he is today with 20 Grammys under his belt and performing at this year's Super Bowl halftime show. I've watched this story dozens of times over the years and nearly cry each time I see it because of the insight, bravery, and courage Kendrick brings to his poetic lyrics and vibe. I often think of all the young kids with talent who don't make it out of tough times & neighborhoods. We often get comments and questions about why women in Gaza get pregnant ignoring their stories, feelings & experiences. After 23 months of genocide, Palestinians in Gaza continue to resist and hold on to life. Hope. Babies bring hope. We listened to these women who struggled to get pregnant for years or lost a child during the genocide. They look down at their unborn children with a smile of hope and gratitude. We gave each mother to be a baby package (2 for mama with twins) that include baby bottle, bottle cleaner, toiletries, outfit, sponge and blanket. Six packages cost around $900. No one, absolutely no one outside of Gaza gets to dictate how Palestinians choose to live and to resist. The military occupation tells Palestinians in Gaza every single day that they don’t deserve life through bombings and an imposed famine. We are here to tell you that we at the Sameer Project do NOT accept that. Palestinians in Gaza deserve life. Women in Gaza deserve to get pregnant. Babies in Gaza deserve to be born into a safe loving environment.
