What starts as Bobby questioning Aaron’s taste in guys turns into a full-blown masculinity contest, with both of them getting more defensive, more aggressive, and somehow more ridiculous by the second. And that’s what makes this scene work: underneath all the macho posturing, Bobby clearly isn’t just arguing about Aaron’s type. There’s actual jealousy and insecurity sitting underneath the jokes. Last time I saw Bob Weir was in Boulder on 4th of July weekend in 2023. Dave Matthews sat in for a Watchtower > Knocking On Heavens Door > The Weight encore. The last video I have in my phone of Bobby is him telling the crowd to “put your load right on me.” How many times did we do that in one way or another? Sitting here now, it feels like a perfect ending for my journey with the music… So many days driving high mountain roads with the background sounds of some Bobby project making the colors even brighter. So many times when I found comfort in the music while dealing with grief and loss. Plenty of days where I felt lost and a lyric landed a little differently and set me down a good thought pattern… None of us get forever, but Bobby’s life will echo on in the songs we play for ourselves and our children for years to come. Sad for the loss tonight, but mostly just grateful for the massive gift Bobby shared with the world and the fact that he spent so much of his final years putting on live shows that introduced a whole other generation to it Fare thee well, Bobby
