Bolaji Abdullahi has asked a devastatingly simple question: “When last did you hear any governor in the APC, or the President for that matter, talk about helping Nigerians travel cheaper?” That question goes straight to the heart of the Atiku effect. For years, Nigerians watched transportation costs consume an...

So This Happened (EP 421) reviews: Atiku questions Tinubu government over subsidy savings Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged the Federal Government to investigate and prosecute him if it has evidence linking him to the controversial $16 billion power-sector expenditure. He also questioned the Tinubu administration over the money saved since the removal of petrol subsidy, asking the government to account for how the additional revenue is being spent. The Presidency has, however, turned the conversation back to Atiku, questioning his position on restoring fuel subsidy and asking for details of his proposed targeted subsidy plan. As both sides continue the political back-and-forth, Nigerians are left asking the bigger question: where exactly are the benefits promised after subsidy removal? #sothishappened #AtikuAbubakar #Tinubu #FuelSubsidy #NigeriaPolitics

Kola Ologbondiyan has reduced the entire subsidy debate to the question that actually matters: After three years of increased government revenue, is life better for the Nigerian paying the bills? That is where all the economic grammar should end. The argument is not that Nigeria should resurrect the old subsidy arrangement with its corruption and leakages. Kola made that abundantly clear. The argument is that no economic policy should become so sacred that government refuses to review it even when ordinary citizens are struggling under its consequences. Tinubu removed subsidy abruptly. Fuel prices multiplied. Transportation became more expensive. Businesses transferred higher operating costs to consumers. Families watched their purchasing power shrink. Government revenues may have increased, governors may be receiving larger allocations, and politicians may commission flyovers, but Nigerians do not eat government revenue figures. The real measurement is the citizen. Can a worker afford transportation? Can a family afford food? Can a sick person afford healthcare? Can a small business survive its energy costs? This is why Atiku’s position deserves a serious hearing rather than APC propaganda about “returning to the past.” Review the entire production and distribution chain. Identify avoidable costs. Remove inefficiencies. Block corruption. Find mechanisms that can reduce the price reaching the consumer. That is policymaking, not ideological surrender. And Kola’s strongest point is perhaps the simplest: ADC intends to put the citizen at the centre of the conversation. Policies are supposed to serve people. People are not supposed to be sacrificed indefinitely so politicians can defend policies. If something is hurting millions of Nigerians, asking whether there is a better way is not weakness. It is precisely what responsible opposition should do.

Dino Melaye while discrediting Peter Obi went ahead to praise Atiku. Now let's Obi for a second and discuss Atiku. Senator Dino Melaye. (SDM) u boldly stated that "It takes Atiku to unify this country. It takes a man that will be trusted in the North, in the South, in the East, and that y'all are researching and documenting on how to lift Nigerians from poverty and insecurity. -Now if Atiku is so trusted why didn't he win elections in the South-East states during the last elections, or even come close? Same Atiku that couldn't condemn religious extremism and the lynching of Deborah over blasphemy, that is the man we Nigerians should trust? Same Atiku that is now in a party with ex APC faithfuls? Is it the same Atiku that formed APC and contributed to this mess we are in today, that wants to rescue Nigeria from "financial scavengers amd economic cankerworms" or what exactly are u talking about? The audacity of u to say that nobody can question the integrity of Atiku.

2027: “If I win the presidential election, I will restore fuel subsidy” — ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore Nigeria’s petrol subsidy if elected president in the 2027 presidential election. Atiku made the declaration during a Facebook Live session while addressing questions about the removal of the subsidy and its impact on Nigerians. He said he did not initially oppose the policy but has since changed his position, questioning how the savings from the subsidy removal have been utilised. “I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security? “If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money.” President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023. The decision triggered a sharp increase in fuel prices, followed by higher transportation, food and other living costs. Tinubu had defended the decision, saying the subsidy had become too costly for the country to sustain.

“While Nigerians are lectured about hardship, those in power preside over brazen waste, corruption and a budget process that makes a mockery of fiscal discipline. The people are told there is no money to ease their pain, yet government always seems to find money for its own appetites.” “Tinubu removed the fuel subsidy with one announcement and no credible protection in place for the families who would bear the shock. Petrol, transport and the cost of moving food rose. He promised that the savings would benefit Nigerians. Three years later, the pain has an address in every home. Bola, where is the benefit?” - HE Atiku Abubakar.

Nigerians, come and see This is a throwback to when Atiku said Peter Obi would not get much votes in the 2023 elections because the Labour Party has no structure, then Atiku’s PDP has 14 governors and 40 Senators, but Obi shocked the naysayers and won the election. Today, Atiku is standing alone in ADC, without a sitting Governor or Senator. Let’s see how many votes he will get in 2027 Waziri of Adamawa, we are rooting for you in 2027! Show them you still got it!

“From all indications in today’s political space, the most popular candidate is Mr Peter Obi. Nigerian politicians should know that there comes a point when you have to make sacrifices for the country. That’s why I appeal to the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to understand that you can take power and still lose the hearts of the people. You do not need to be president for your name to be engraved in the hearts of Nigerians. He has an opportunity to become a statesman.” — Randy Peterz

Sheikh Tijjani Guruntum has said what millions of Nigerians are feeling silently: any government policy that always ends with the masses suffering must be questioned. Democracy is not dictatorship wearing agbada. Democracy means listening to the people. Democracy means that when citizens cry out, leaders pause, reflect and adjust. Democracy means government policies should serve the people, not punish them. But under Tinubu’s APC, every major policy appears to arrive with pain first and explanation later. Fuel subsidy removal brought hardship. The naira float brought pressure. Electricity tariff increases brought more burden. New tax conversations bring fresh fear. Food prices keep rising. Transport keeps punishing workers. Businesses keep struggling. Families keep reducing their dreams. At what point will this government admit that Nigerians are tired? The people are not rejecting reform because they hate progress. They are rejecting policies that make life unbearable while the political class continues to live comfortably. You cannot ask the poor to sacrifice endlessly while those in power enjoy luxury, convoys, allowances and protection from the same hardship they created. If this is truly democracy, then Tinubu’s government must listen. When the majority of citizens say a policy is hurting them, leadership should not insult them with grammar. It should not call them opposition agents. It should not tell them to be patient forever. It should listen, correct and protect the people. Sheikh Guruntum is right: we cannot continue like this. A government exists to reduce suffering, not multiply it. A leader is elected to serve citizens, not test their endurance. Nigeria cannot survive another four years of policies that treat the masses like collateral damage. Tinubu’s APC must understand one thing clearly: Nigerians are watching, Nigerians are hurting, and Nigerians will remember. In 2027, every painful policy will have a political consequence.

"...You should ask yourself: What is Atiku selling to Nigerians? Credibility, performance, ethics, or morality? The answer is nothing. What is Peter Obi selling beyond the fact that he represents the aspirations of the Southeast for the presidency? They are running a bland campaign. When you listen to Peter Obi speak, his delivery is flat and he unfortunately lacks the oratorical power to sell his vision. Tinubu may not have that either, but he has a proven record as a political force in Nigeria..." - Prof. Femi Otubanjo, Research Professor, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs

When I first argued that government should review its approach to the withdrawal of petrol subsidy and consider responsible intervention to bring down the cost of fuel, Mr. Bola Tinubu dismissed my proposal as demonstrating “serious ignorance” of governance and the economy. My dear Bola, events since then have raised a simple question. Is the Nigeria Labour Congress also ignorant when it calls for urgent intervention to cushion workers from rising petrol prices? Are petroleum marketers ignorant when they call for policies that strengthen domestic refining and help moderate pump prices? Are Nigerian manufacturers ignorant when they warn that power-related expenses now consume more than half of operating costs? And are the millions of Nigerians crying out because they can no longer afford transportation, food and other basic necessities also ignorant? When workers, producers, marketers and ordinary families are all raising the alarm, government must listen. If everybody who questions your policy is ignorant, while only the President is presumed to be wise, then we have a leadership problem on our hands. - Atiku Abubakar. This is a very serious allegation, and Tinubu’s APC government should not laugh it away or hide under propaganda. When a respected public figure reportedly alleges that many officials around this government are using hard drugs and that it affects how they speak and behave, Nigerians deserve more than insults and political noise. They deserve answers. Because honestly, the conduct of this administration has raised too many questions. The arrogance. The carelessness. The strange explanations. The poor communication. The reckless policies. The complete emotional disconnect from the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. A government that removed subsidy without a proper cushion, floated the naira without protecting the poor, watched food prices explode, and still keeps speaking as if citizens are complaining too much, must expect Nigerians to question the mindset behind those decisions. Whether this allegation is investigated or denied, one thing is clear: Tinubu’s APC has lost moral authority. The country is bleeding, yet many in power talk like they are living in another world. Nigeria cannot continue under leaders who appear detached from reality while the people are hungry, angry and exhausted. 2027 must be about competence, clarity, discipline and accountability. Tinubu’s APC has embarrassed governance enough.

Why is the Tinubu-led APC administration obsessed with chasing shadows, focused on inanities, and applying energy to something that has no positive impact on Nigerians? Now, they want to change the name FIRS to NRS. What is all this, ffs? This name change will cost the country several millions of naira, if billions of naira in branding, correspondence, operational activities etc at a time when Nigerians are experiencing unprecedented hardship and suffering, and the economy is in comatose. I have never seen an administration that lacks empathy and is out of touch with reality like the T pain led government. They changed the National anthem, of what significant value has that added to the lives of Nigerians, are Nigerians more patriotic or what? Any measurable impact? Abi price of garri go reduce. The Tinibu-led APC administration continues to give the middle finger to Nigerians. They are brazenly showing that they don't give a shit about the plight of Nigerians. What a shame. This administration continues to sink Nigeria into pain and suffering. This isn't about politics, let anyone tell us how the name change of FIRS will positively improve the lot of the common man. Is there anyone left in the APC that still has a thinking cap on?

This gentleman analyzed the Nigerian situation perfectly. Mind you, During Obasanjo’s reign, Atiku Abubakar was in charge of the nation’s economic affairs! For those who cannot differentiate good from bad should please watch this video and listen to the young man’s analysis of how Nigeria get where they are today! I personally warned Nigerians in 2015 regarding Buhari coming back to power Tribalism and bigotry took over all senses! It is a given that one who has been tested and proven should be given the opportunity to fix what is broken! I stand with Atiku Abubakar

Our People First agenda is gathering momentum across Nigeria. At the heart of that agenda is my firm commitment to make life affordable again for Nigerian families. That includes restoring fuel subsidy—not the old import-dependent system, but a targeted production subsidy that supports fuel refined here in Nigeria, strengthens domestic production and is designed to reduce the price Nigerians pay at the pump. When fuel becomes more affordable, transportation costs can ease. The cost of moving food from farms to markets can come down. Small businesses can breathe again. Families can keep more of their hard-earned money. That is the purpose of our People First policy: put the welfare of Nigerians at the centre of government. The tremendous reception we received in Ondo State today, as we welcomed new members into our great party, the ADC, was deeply encouraging. The enthusiasm was unmistakable. Our message remains clear: produce here, refine here, create Nigerian jobs, lower the cost of fuel and make life affordable again. Thank you, Ondo State, for the warm and memorable reception.-AA

Atiku: I Will Categorically Return Subsidy, Disregard Unauthorised Remark from My Aide Nigeria is rich enough to take care of the welfare of its citizens. Let me make it clear that my aide, Paul Ibe, was not speaking with my authority when he made remarks that contradict my policy on subsidy removal. The removal of the subsidy has driven more Nigerians into poverty than at any other time, and the fundamental responsibility of government is the welfare of the people. I will also ensure that we secure this country. We are competing against thieves: they stole the election, and now they are stealing from the economy. Atiku Abubakar, ADC Presidential Candidate

Just a few days ago, you bombed innocent Nigerians in a market in Geidam. In this case, you jumped the fence of his home, killed him in his bedroom and this is the best you can come up with? Who made the call that you responded to? Where exactly was the armed robbery? How many of the armed robbers did you neutralise or arrest? How many innocent Nigerians has the Nigerian military decided to kill? Is the death from terrorists, herdsmen, kidnappers and hardship not enough? Is it a crime to be a Nigerian?

Dear @verydarkblackman How do you claim to fight for the Nigerian people, and you are comfortable around or with the people that are the primary cause of our pain? You claim to be apolitical, but you feel it is ok for Obi Cubana to enter the APC, the very party that has turned Nigeria to the poverty capital of the world? Make it make sense. 🤦🏾‍♂️ APC has wasted 12 years of our lives as Nigerians and has taken us back in all sectors. How can you be ok with anyone joining that cult of Thieves? Nobody joins APC to change it from the inside; it is a cesspit of corruption headed by the MOST CORRUPT MAN ever.

The Special Assistant to the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Barau Jibrin, has resigned from office, dumped the APC, and declared his support for Atiku Abubakar in Kano on Saturday. He cited Tinubu’s failures and the way this government has sidelined the North while favouring only the President’s own state and region. As a farmer in the North, no one needs to tell you to campaign and vote against Tinubu in 2027. His policies have destroyed our businesses. That is why we are coming out massively for Atiku Abubakar, he added. 👏

It is sad that this government, which has shown such disdain for everyday Nigerians that are struggling under the weight of its failures, has now chosen to extend that same disregard to honest Nigerians who have japa'd in search of better opportunities. A government that has failed, and continues to fail, on security, the economy, healthcare, education, and virtually every measure of human dignity has no business lying to Nigerians and the world that things are better for the Nigerians in Nigeria, than they are for Nigerians abroad. Until this government can guarantee safety, create jobs, restore economic stability, and inspire confidence at home, it should either fix Nigeria or stop lecturing Nigerians who have simply done what the government itself has failed to do: secured a better future for themselves and their families. For perspective, and a little bit of respect, Nigeria's total oil export earnings in 2025 were US$31.5 billion, while official diaspora remittances for the same year amounted to US$21.8 billion

H.E Rotimi Amaechi has said what many Nigerians are already saying quietly in markets, homes, offices, campuses, motor parks, and community gatherings: if the 2027 election is free, fair, and credible, Tinubu may face a serious political battle. Amaechi’s statement is not just ordinary political talk. It reflects the visible mood of the country. Hunger has deepened. Poverty has expanded. Food prices have become a daily punishment. Fuel has become a heavy burden. Electricity remains unreliable for many citizens. Income has not grown at the same speed as the cost of survival. That is why Amaechi believes Tinubu can be defeated with ease in 2027. Not because the opposition has magic, but because the government has handed the opposition its strongest campaign message. Everywhere you go, ordinary Nigerians are asking the same painful question: is this the renewed hope they were promised? Tinubu came with the language of “Renewed Hope”, but for many struggling households, what they feel is renewed hunger, renewed hardship, renewed frustration, and renewed anger. This is no longer just politics. This is about the stomach. And when the stomach is crying, propaganda cannot easily silence it. RFI Hausa interviewed Amaechi as a presidential aspirant, where he explained what he would do if elected in 2027 and argued that hunger and poverty under the current administration have made Tinubu politically vulnerable. His message is simple: the hardship Nigerians are experiencing today may become the strongest force against the ruling party in 2027. ADC must take this message seriously. Opportunities like this do not come often. When citizens are crying, the opposition must become their voice. When citizens are suffering, the opposition must become their pathway. When citizens are tired of excuses, the opposition must present a clear alternative. But Tinubu will not be defeated by noise alone. ADC must build structure, present a credible candidate, unite the North and the South, enter communities, protect votes, and speak in the language ordinary Nigerians understand. The 2027 election will not only be decided by elite speeches. It will be decided by hungry stomachs, empty pockets, unemployed youths, mothers calculating food money, fathers struggling to meet family needs, and citizens who feel abandoned after big campaign promises. If Tinubu has the power of incumbency, ADC has the chance to harness something even stronger: public anger and the desire for change.
