On the call, you can hear the operator say a man at Mitch McConnell’s home was found unconscious in cardiac arrest and that CPR was being given. That means Senator McConnell needed to be resuscitated. That’s the whole purpose of CPR. Once a person goes into Cardiac Arrest, it cuts off blood and oxygen to the brain, which causes brain cell injury or death, known as hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. McConnell was found unconscious and nobody is telling us how long he was unconscious for. If he was unconscious for more than 5 minutes, he 100% has severe brain damage and is a vegetable. A person is usually pronounced completely brain dead if they are unconscious and in cardiac arrest for more than 10 minutes. CPR on an 84 year old man is very dangerous and likely broke all of Mitch McConnell’s ribs. Giving CPR to an 84-year-old man can be life-saving, but it comes with significant challenges. Survival rates to hospital discharge for this age group are roughly 15%.
