Then, ironically admits later in her testimony that her own people did, in fact, have good experiences. The very “denialism” she wants criminalized is the truth she just confessed. Absolutely egregious. Not only are the Liberals refusing to let us study Bill C-16 and protect women and children, they're trying to ram their censorship bill, C-9, through committee with just TWO HOURS of debate on amendments, after which it would automatically go to a vote.

Leah Gazan wants more money for residential-school survivors and “denialism” made a HATE CRIME. She says reconciliation requires TRUTH. Then points to Parliament agreeing in 2022. She even includes “denying stories” in her description of violence. Since when does challenging a claim become violence? Parliament agreeing does not put every allegation beyond scrutiny. You want truth, Leah? Then demanding evidence comes with the territory. You don’t get to demand acceptance and call it reconciliation.

if you notice, fina is annoyed in this scene precisely because marta doesn't want to stay. not because she is there. she asks marta to stay and have a drink with her and claudia, but marta makes up a (fake) excuse to leave. fina is annoyed because this further proves how far apart they are. she wants marta to stay there with them, to relax, to have a drink. but she makes up an excuse to go and work. it annoys her because it proves her point to claudia that they can't quite meet at the point where they were before she went to argentina. they are disconnected. she even says at the end of the scene that she hopes they can get back on track soon. fian wasn't being a brat because marta was there. she was being a brat because marta put her walls back up, and decided to leave. rather than stay with them.

Today I went to see a speech by Kim Murray, who released her final report about residential schools. Part of her focus was on what she calls “residential school denialism”. She defines denialism pretty broadly – it includes minimizing the harm of residential schools, saying the death rates were typical for the period, saying that we don’t know the truth, that there is a conspiracy to exaggerate deaths, and that it wasn’t a genocide. And Murray wants to criminalize this speech. This is a terrible idea. A lot is unknown, and creating a broad criminal sanction around this topic will not allow for an investigation to take place. Residential schools were a terrible policy, and to the extent that people want to minimize how bad it was, the stories Murray collected in her report are a better answer to that misunderstanding. Stories like experimentation on children, abuse, and disease. Those stories are the answer. Not criminalizing speech.
