But the truth is, there’s no such thing as an “Islamist.” A Muslim’s worldview is shaped by Islam, and Islam is fundamentally incompatible with the core values the West has globalized. Islamist extremism is very often linked to antisemitism — and we need to be honest about the facts. Around 94% of terrorist murders in the UK over the past 25 years were committed by Islamist extremists. About 75% of the counter-terrorism caseload is Islamist-related. Yet Prevent’s caseload is only around 10% Islamist. That mismatch is deeply concerning. It suggests resources are not being focused where the threat is greatest. We must take a clear-eyed, evidence-led approach — tackle Islamist extremism head on, and root out antisemitism wherever it appears.
