Bong Joon Ho’s #Oscar win for Best Director back in 2020 is one of my favorite moments in the 98 year history of the Academy Awards. Joon Ho became the first Korean filmmaker to win Best Director & the first to win Best Picture for a non-English language film. But it’s not just the ground that Joon Ho broke or the barriers he demolished that made this moment so impressive. It’s that Joon Ho used this moment to thank those who inspired him- like Martin Scorsese & Quentin Tarantino. I truly believe that’s what all cinema is about- learning from those who came before you & inspiring those who come after you. This moment captured cinema’s purpose in so many ways.
