Gandalf the White vs Witch-king of Angmar. But Slightly More Book Accurate. 🧙‍♂️ According to the book, Gandalf and the Witch-king meet at the gate of Minas Tirith and exchange a brief challenge, but they never actually fight. In particular, the scene where the Witch-king breaks Gandalf’s staff is entirely a film invention. The Witch-king neither possesses that kind of power nor the authority to do such a thing in Tolkien’s writings. However, it is worth remembering that during the Siege of Gondor, the Witch-king had been specially empowered by Sauron. This is likely one of the main reasons he was bold enough to challenge Gandalf in the first place. What are your thoughts on this scene?

In The Return of the King – Extended Edition, the film shows a full Gandalf vs. Witch-king showdown. But in the book, the scene is completely different. Gandalf’s staff is never broken, and they never actually fight. They only face each other at the gate until the horns of the Rohirrim echo across the Pelennor. Hearing them, the Witch-king immediately turns away to meet the riders. Even the breaking of the gate differs: in the book, Grond only succeeds because the Witch-king’s sorcery empowers each strike. 🧙‍♂️
