Boom, headshot! Switching between artillery, cavalry and infantry required quite a bit of skill, but if you were a sharpshooter with that cannon, your enemies stood no chance. North & South (Infogrames, 1989)

IMHO Amiga version of N&S is the best one (looks great and sounds better than PC). Sweet times.

100% agree, the Amiga version was the best. PCs at the time didn't feel superior... yet.

We had to deactivate the turbo button to get it running at normal speed. And if there was no turbo button, we used a snail program that reduced the cycles.

Hah, dang. Well, back then I only played this on the Amiga, so no issues there.

Ever tried playing "Barbarian" on 44 MHz? It's a one second suicide run.

Always enjoyed this game. IIRC you can poke the photographer in the backside on the front end and he laughs

Yep, in the opening menu, true :) Another small little Easter egg from the devs.

I was 13 when I learned the game was based on a Franco-Belgian comic book.

Yes! I was 11 years old when I master this game. You press fire as soon as the battle start, aim at the enemy artillery, destroy it, switch to cavalry, make sure they don't fall into the river, let them loose, switch to infantry. Muscle memory 🥹

Really shows you how much of a step up the Blue and Gray game was, which. Ithink came out around 93

So many fun games packed into one. The indians were infuriating though, cutting your army in half with no chance of avoiding it

Infogrames was one of those studios that had a very distinct art style. Same in Full Metal Planete and Metal Masters.

This was remade about a decade or so and is available on Steam. It's just as fun. I always loved shooting the cannons first, then the bridge and cover the ford with the infantry

I'd love to create a game like this. Or maybe I just like maps.

One of my favourite games! You could even kill all six infantry with your infantry with a single well aimed volley!

North & South on the Amiga – One of the most charming 16-bit takes on the Civil War! Infogrames brought the humor of the Belgian comic Les Tuniques Bleues to life in this 1989 Commodore Amiga classic. Pick the Union or Confederacy, conquer territory across the USA map, manage railroads for income, and dive into hilarious arcade-style battles. Pure strategy mixed with cartoon action! Here are 5 interesting facts about the Amiga version: 1. The game is directly based on the long-running Belgian comic series Les Tuniques Bleues by Raoul Cauvin and Willy Lambil. It keeps the light-hearted, satirical tone instead of a serious war sim, complete with cartoonish characters and animations. 2. Released in 1989 by Infogrames for Amiga and Atari ST. It was the original version, developed in-house with stunning colourful graphics, sampled sound effects, and a memorable soundtrack by Charles Callet that includes funny national anthem parodies depending on the language chosen. 3. Five languages supported right from the start: English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The menu has fun hidden touches, like clicking on the photographer's backside for a funny reaction. 4. Strategy meets arcade perfectly – move armies on the map to capture states, then switch to real-time mini-games when attacking forts (dodge cannon fire and plant dynamite) or trains (race along the tracks). Army battles let you command infantry, cavalry, and artillery with side-view chaos. 5. Excellent two-player support with hotseat or simultaneous play. The game is fast-paced, accessible, and sessions usually last 15-30 minutes, making it perfect for quick matches or long rivalries. A true Amiga classic that still holds up for its humour, presentation, and addictive blend of strategy and action. Who’s played it – North or South side?

A revealing exchange with Christian nationalist William Wolfe 🇺🇸 on whether Christianity involves loving one's enemies: Matthew Kaemingk: Center of the Christian faith — loving your enemies. Who is your enemy, and how are you called to love them? Finish us off with that. Wolfe: That’s not the center of the Christian faith. The center of the Christian faith is repenting and believing in Jesus. Matthew, I’m not going to accept your framing there. It is not the center of the Christian faith. Not even close. Christ actually defeated his enemies and he’s going to put them all under his feet. So it’s like, I’m sorry, I can’t accept that. So you want to try that question again? Kaemingk: No, I think that’s a great way to end. Wolfe: Well, no, I mean, that doesn’t mean we don’t love our enemies. I’m not going to accept the—I think that’s actually quite a liberal vision of Christianity, that the center of it is loving our enemies, when we worship and serve a risen, resurrected, and reigning Christ who’s going to return with a sword to put all of his enemies under his feet, the ones who do not repent and believe. Kaemingk: I still think we should love our enemies. William Wolfe: Absolutely. But I will say this: loving your enemies is not a public policy prescription, right? I’ve said this before, you’re not a very good Christian if you don’t help somebody broken down on the side of the road because you think they’re an illegal immigrant. You, of course, you should help them, right? Like, that’s not how we should be carrying ourselves. But we can also still enforce our immigration laws, and I see no contradiction between the two.
