Booster 20’s landing burn was something…. It started with 10/13 engines lighting for the burn and 5 engines remaining lit until the eventual splash into the Gulf. I hope more information comes out soon after launch!

Booster 20 appears to have failed to light some of its engines during the landing burn 😔 It will be interesting to hear whether or not the unhealthy engines were detected after boost back and if it would have been cleared to return to the launch site. I don't think we have seen how a situation like this would be handled.

After flying to a peak altitude of ~90km, traveling more than 60 km downrange from Starbase, and completing its boostback burn and coast, Super Heavy ignited its landing burn less than 40 meters away from the preflight target. The Raptor engines and booster guidance system precisely maneuvered the vehicle through the highest wind speeds yet for a Super Heavy landing burn. Upgrades to the chopstick controls enabled them to start wider and move earlier for catch, expanding the envelope for booster landing burn trajectories.

The hot-staging into boost-back during Flight 12 was pretty chaotic so I decided to try to simplify what occurred by looking at the visuals and the telemetry. This is my take and the engines that failed to light or shutoff could be wrong. I am open to corrections. Booster 19 had failed to light some of its engines at the start of its boost-back before experiencing an energetic event in the inner engines that knocked out surrounding engines. E5 or E6 may be the culprit as E7 eventually relit during the landing burn.

We extended the hotfire duration this time to simulate the landing burn sequence by shutting down the non-gimballed engines after ramping down to 50 percent thrust, then shutting down the outboard gimballed engines while ramping the center engine to 80 percent thrust. This helps us understand fluid interactions between active and inactive engine feedlines during landing. Next, we will mate NASA's ESCAPADE payload to the launch vehicle and enter final preparations for launch.

I thought I'd try to illustrate how Starship 39 made up for a less than optimal sub-orbital insertion and lower-than-planned perigee by using aerodynamics during re-entry to extend its downrange flight profile and make an on-target landing in the Indian Ocean. The ship used a combination of Angle-of Attack (AOA) changes, the flaps and body of the ship as lifting surfaces to manage the total drag forces to "fly" a longer distance, all while managing plasma heating & velocity decreases to prepare for the landing burn. SpaceX had to do this because of the loss of the one RVAC at about the 3:03 mark just after hot staging, resulting in the remaining 5 engines to compensate and burn longer. SpaceX timeline called for 11-seconds of entry burn (short, but for RTLS), but this Booster only burned for about three seconds. Then fought a fair bit during the return but still managed to land! Secondary to the smooth crew launch on Dragon, which all went well, but it is fascinating if the booster had an entry burn issue, but STILL got back to the landing site OK! Or SpaceX changed something and didn't update their timeline. Let's see if we get an official answer during post-launch presser.
